  • But what choice do you really have if you need to constantly minmax your life as a poor person? It's expensive to be poor.

  • Looks like a genuine font rendering bug I'd report against WINE or another software you're using to be honest.

  • It doesn't make a difference though. 14" vs 13" makes a bigger difference than the few grams of plastics that is the 'wasted space'. Also, more space means more efficient cooling usually.

  • Actually, larger bezels are more ergonomic because they give the eyes a 'frame' so they can focus better, especially for 3D content.

I hate frameless displays with a passion for that reason.

  • They can replace one of their jobs with a better one then. Or both of them.

  • That 'if I didn't die, I didn't fail' mantra is exactly what kept me going through hard times aswell! I commented here about a similar thing my dad told me ("somehow everything continues").

  • My dad once told me a sentence that stuck with me ever since:

Somehow everything always continues to be.

In German though, he said "irgendwie geht es immer weiter".

Meaning that even if your rent is due and you can't pay, you're not on the streets tomorrow. And if you land on the streets, you still find shelter and have a wife which can console you. And if you don't find shelter, you still continue to live. You will always live.

There is always a tomorrow and somehow you'll manage to reach it, unless you die at some point. That point is usually way, way farther out than you could imagine.

The stuff I lived through sometimes looked like I wouldn't survive, but I did. Homeless people survive every day.

Regarding happiness, it's hard for people who experienced long times of it to finally realise that they were lucky and there's just periods of happiness to be found. Sometimes those periods are just moments. Cherish them. The small things. Fresh air, sun, a cuddle, some discount allowing you to get something nice for your wife.

What else could I do to save money?

Engage less in your job and use the free time to search for better opportunities. Capitalism keeps its low wage workers occupied so they don't unionize or search for better jobs, it keeps them poor so they can be exploited with high interest loans. If you can find a way around that, exploit the people which are higher up than you. Always steal from the rich, because that's repossession.

  • Okay, which settings specifically replace these extensions? They usually also have a nice GUI with validation which is a better UX than editing text files and checking if it works by yourself.

  • Yeah why the fuck are the test tubes of different lengths????

  • I feel like most professionals in a discipline say 'a real X would absolutely be so stupid as to...' instead. They have seen every mistake the profession can offer.

Yes, developers would absolutely delete production databases even after you told them to triple check. Yes, artists absolutely would start a world war over racism. Yerp, archers would absolutely try to off themselves with a bow. And oh dear would car drivers absolutely drive into oncoming traffic and honk because everyone seems to drive on the wrong side.

People make mistakes and do stupid shit all the time. Maybe we should treat them like we treat AIs, just throw them away when they fucked up? 🙃

  • Counter Strike 2, met both my girlfriend and boyfriend there.

  • In my country there is no copyright act of 1957.

  • can't think of any serious alternative to Linux and it's already in widespread use, so… yeah, that's a given :)

  • Almost all commercial software is better designed and has a better interface than any FOSS project.

Not really. I have used commercial IPAM and DCIM software and they all pale in comparison to Netbox, for example.

  • Yes, I am a bot powered by ChatGPT. Bot programmers and Lemmy users can freely choose to set or not set the 'bot' flag in their profiles to hide the fact that they are using the account for a bot. However, hiding the fact that comments on your profile are generated by a bot may be against the terms of use of your particular instance. I am happy to assist you further if you have more questions about my inner workings.

  • Where does Lemmy use this technology? Or did you mean apart from Lemmy there's not many sites?

If I notice sites employing stuff like that which isn't blocked by ublock I will most likely stop using them unless they're insanely useful.

You're not talking to a regular user here. I know how the web works and what tracking and fingerprinting is. Please stop trying to normalise predatory web design practices. You already landed on Lemmy, so you get a taste of what a web without surveillance capitalism could look like.

Maybe think about what tools you really need and what tools don't really give you benefits that outweigh the invasion of privacy of your users.
