  • Making AI art not copyrightable is probably the best reasonable alternative that we could hope for.

Companies are always looking to cut costs and getting some computer algorithm to churn out endless art without having to pay an artist would be a corporate holy grail. Except that if that artwork then can't be copyrighted and thus monetized (or not as easily monetized), then it ruined or at least lessens their push to replace all their workers with AI.

  • Spare me the nonsense. The left couldn't win elections in the bluest cities in the bluest counties in the bluest states and yet somehow the Dems are supposed to fall over themselves to support far-left causes??? Why? Where is the incentive? The Left time and time and time again proves they can't bring in the voters. And to be clear, I would like it if Dems had more liberal members, but I know what the reality is. Something that far too many people on the Left simply refuse to admit - the Left doesn't have the numbers. So you can claim some conspiracy-level nonsense about "systematically suppressing" blah-blah-blah, but votes win elections, and if you don't win elections, you as a political party have no power to enact laws.

I am happy to vote and support more centrist politicians who I might agree with on 80+% of the issues out there and can actually WIN elections, than hold out for some unicorn candidate who I agree with on all issues, but has no chance in bloody hell of winning anything. Because ultimately the alternative is some far-right douchebag who I agree with probably less than 10% of the time on various issues.

  • What makes me hopeful of the future is simply the fact that most negative news is overblown.

Yes, we have environmental issues that need to be addressed, but guess what... the world isn't ending tomorrow. Climate change isn't going to kill everyone by next year or even in 10 or 20 years. There are real hurdles we need to clear, but the end-is-coming-tomorrow doom and gloom is simply hyperbole.

Humanity is very good at creating problems, but we are also really good at solving problems.

I personally love history and I also am a big gearhead. Throughout the roughly 100 years of the automobile, there have been some major events where the general attitude has been that X-type of car is doomed, or Y-event is something that will kill off cars for good, and initially those predictions are true, but when all the hyperbole dies down and engineers are given the resources we need, solutions typically are found that previously would have been considered impossible. The oil crises of the 70s is one such event. We had massive 7 liter engines that could barely make more than 100 HP with smog regulations and fuel economy concerns. Now some 50 years later, gasoline engines are so clean, you could just about breathe their exhaust all while still making tons of power and getting damn impressive fuel economy. But that only happens when the executives shut the fuck up, the marketers stop crying, and the accountants open their wallets and let the engineers do what they do best.

  • All it will take is one more Republican presidency to get the separation of church and state to be knocked down.

There will be some out there who think I'm crazy for saying it, and they will claim it will never happen. Yeah... ok. We all thought RvW was secure as well. It doesn't even have to be Trump. ALL Republicans are radicalized extremists. That entire party is corrupt to it's core and it will shove religion down our throats if they regain the White House and keep their power in Congress.

What infuriates me even more than all this, is the thought that there would be protests out in the streets the day AFTER Republicans win the White House by people who couldn't be bothered to vote the day earlier. They were too busy or it would be too much trouble to go vote on Tuesday November 5th, but they sure seem to find time to go protest and loot the local electronics store on Wednesday November 6th.

  • Let's see all the people who complain about Twitter and Musk and post it ON TWITTER.

If even 1/2 these clowns that claim to hate him and what he's done simply deleted their accounts, the entire site would collapse. Instead they literally prop-up that toxic site by continuing to use it. Fucken hypocrites.

  • Wasn't that years ago what he did when one of the networks fired him, but he couldn't go on another network because of contractual reasons? I think might have seen some of it. Or maybe it was the build-up to it. I might give it a shot, but if there are celebrities on it, I'll tune out. Celebrity worship makes me want to puke and no pre-written banter between a host and a celeb can hold my attention for long.

  • Conan has his moments, but I much rather see him write/act in skits about current events than sucking up to celebrities. Peak Conan was when he was still fresh from being a writer for The Simpsons, and I seem to find him less and less funny as the years go on.

  • Whether this is a "hit piece" or not, I have never found Fallon funny in the slightest bit and absolutely hate the entire late night talk show format. It's just sucking up to celebrities for 2 goddamn hours. Utterly fake conversations with fake people trying to plug their latest projects. Every thing about it annoys the fuck out of me.

  • Yes, it is infuriating, but getting mad at the situation only makes things worse. It isn't like they will change or "get better" - you (hopefully) get better from a cold or illness. You don't exactly "get better" from old age.

If they listen to you at all, consider that a win. If they are financially in decent condition, that's also a massive win. If you can convince them to improve their health that has the potential to help the situation - eat better, maybe go for walks around the neighborhood.

I am going to assume that you don't live with them, so one thing that has helped my mother tremendously is getting her an iPad. Both parents (who are older than OP's parents by quite a bit) are not tech savvy in the slightest bit (I can not stress enough how NOT techie they are), plus their native language is not English, so communication for them has always been a little difficult. But getting my mother an iPad and installing Facebook on it was easily the best gift ever. She is able to communicate with relatives she hasn't seen in decades. She can video chat with people 1/2 way around the world. It really is pretty amazing, especially since before the iPad, she's never used a computer or had an email address or anything like that. Facebook gets a lot of well-deserved hate, but set it up for them, block whatever you can block and just make the it as streamlined as possible for them to use it. The large screen size on the iPad works infinitely better than a small phone screen.
