  • That's not what being normalised means, and you know it.

The post is clearly complaining about it being overused in all forms of jobs, like office workers or shop assistants. Drug testing is debatably justified for workers using heavy machinery and operating vehicles.

The drug testing procedure in itself is invasive, and should only be required with very good reasoning.

  • Apple did https://www.macrumors.com/2023/11/08/8gb-ram-m3-macbook-pro-like-16-gb-pc/

It's not directly mentioned in this conversation, but the excuse as to why they put such a pathetic amount of RAM in the laptop is that "Macs use it more efficiently"

edit: The quote is "Actually, 8GB on an M3 MacBook Pro is probably analogous to 16GB on other systems. We just happen to be able to use it much more efficiently."

  • I would love to be convinced otherwise. But it's stuff like brain damage and general mental degradation that makes it difficult to believe that a "soul" or another spiritual body contains the self

  • The point is that literally right now houses are not being 3D printed to a good enough standard that we would even think about replacing workers.

It is also true that technological progress will change that sooner or later.

    I don't think there's a disagreement here

  • It's both really. Too many people rock a cracked screen, then upgrade it as soon as they can. Rather than looking after their device or getting it repaired.

But at the same time, corporations limit device longevity due to bad practices. Like limited security updates, planned obsolescence and anti-repair policies.

In short, not enough people care enough, and the companies prey on this. Attacking the "upgrade culture" is valuable, as legislating against these bad practices can only happen if the people exert enough political pressure

  • The company should be able to determine that your productivity isn't good enough by the work you produce. Not micromanaging the keystrokes per minute.

If your work is really so unimportant that slacking off for 4+ hours a day isn't noticed, they should be making you redundant. Not forcing spyware on every innocent employee
