What still eludes me is if I have 35c outside and want 25c inside, those 10c times cubic meters go outside in the form of 50 or 60c hot air. And I think thats why people like me think it is possible to get those 15-25c difference back in the form of electricity (or at least not spend them so that the excess heat is not pumped outside).
Currently, the most efficient way of cooling I know of in computers are vapor chambers, so instead of a copper block, you have a chamber (also made from copper) with 1/3 or so filled with water and the lowest point is the hottest part. The water boils, evaporates and settles in the porous walls of the chamber, dissipating the heat and flowing back to the bottom. Those then go into giant fins and are transferred to air. The Nvidia a100 does this in an interesting way. They built one giant vaporchamber system into it, transferring all the heat to the top. I presume its a lot more efficient than water but I lack the specific knowledge to judge the precise efficiency.
In any case, I assume there will be more efficient ways to transfer heat in the future. What eludes me is why we always have heat output and are unable to just transfer heat to electricity or at least movement. I think I‘m missing a key information.
The reason I'm asking is that 100 m³ of 60 C air would have a specific amount of energy (watts?) in them, right? And from there to absolute zero (0K) would be "available energy" in my perception. Or is "available" something else?
I dunno if it’s usable internationally but idealo checks a couple of vendors. Maybe that helps.
And yes, I can relate. I was in a bit of a bind as I‘d like to stop using my laptop to spare it from eventual heat death. Otherwise, I‘d maybe not have bought one.
But still, I don’t see gpu prices drop again since ai is buying them in bulk.
I‘ve been in the market for a gpu for half a year now. Made charts and tracked price development.
The gpu prices are not dropping anymore. They are stable for 3 months roughly and even increasing.
That’s why I pulled the trigger on a card that is hopefully worth the 300+ eurons :) I‘m trying to phase out my 3070 pandemic windows laptop for an ubuntu tower because I always get worried when the laptop has a lot to do.
The whole machine gets hot (temps in hwinfo are ok) and I fear that the constant thermal expansion will ruin it earlier rather than later. Also the small whiny fans are a pain to listen to for extended periods.
The firmware also is a proprietary mess which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Since I have a linux server for two years I suppose I‘ll manage somehow.
I don’t think last gen will drop soon, just a guess though. I‘d rather think that they get sold out soon and you need to buy used then. Which also are highly priced.
Its a moderation problem. Same on reddit. An active mod will comment (or outright remove) if a comment is not helpful or outright toxic.
People seem to think that a world without rules will work. I‘m autistic and mindblind and even I understand that while this would work for me (I make my own rules for myself based on morality and religiously adhere to them) it does not work for 90% of the population. Therefore moderation is required.
I think Matrix only makes sense if you‘re already using instant messaging of some sort. Either discord, whatsapp, signal, what have you…
If you are using one of these services, there is a high chance that your data is sold, traded and used for all kinds of purposes, from training AI to manipulating your life choices (or as simple as selling something to you).
If a person is not using social media at all (and has an offline friend circle), then they should happily stay away from any of these products, federated/foss same as the others. Simply because social media is addictive.
But for those (like me) who don’t make friends easily offline, social media makes sense. And for those, it is far better to trust db0 or whatever the admins name is of an instance, than google,
has only one answer. Hell yes!
Element is a for profit company and therefore not the best idea if you want to go fully without data collection I assume. But then you also need to keep all smart devices in your home from calling home, you need a rooted android phone or similar, etc.
So I propose that we do our best, keeping the megacorps from collecting and selling our data without a penny of the profits going to us. In the meantime, we make compromises where necessary. If element is the only „usable“ client for you, let them have at it for the time being. Especially on ios, you‘re transparent to apple anyway and besides you don’t see the apps in development until they leave testflight (iirc).
Let me know if you have any further questions. Have a good one. :)
I'm not sure I understand you correctly. Pushing a certain OS (or browser, or anything for profit) is absolutely unacceptable. We want a pc, not a "windows pc" by default. The OS market is pretty much a monopoly up to this point and presumably for the last 5-10 years, MS has only made this much profit because it was forced on consumers.
It’s basically our texas or florida, depending on your pov. It’s a place with great nature, interesting culture but also very crude beliefs and you either like the culture or you dont. Most importantly, police is said to be a pot rougher over there and politics is pretty conservative as well.
Finally! This link aggregator bs was going on my nerves already and I blocked all politics and news since most of it us rage bait imo.
You’re absolutely correct. We need the juicy stuff that gets people talking without bashing each others heads in. For this, we need people who make communities, post stuff and attract other creative folks.
I made a tech community since I am a tech guy. Everyone who wants this place to thrive should make a community and/or post something of value every day.
I can see a future where it is not permitted to install only one OS. Either you have a micro os that lets you download a full one or you have to decide the OS before getting the pc. The idea of hardware default coming with a proprietary os is just crap imo.
Interesting! I never thought of the ps3 marketshare/sales. Makes a ton of sense. I will keep an eye out for sources so I can make an informed decision. :)
Thanks for letting me know! I‘m playing with the idea of a handheld but I‘m open to other options since I would love to balance price/experience/comfort.
Most people say rooted ps3 would work well, one said it doesn’t. I sadly only have an iphone atm so android is no option. I could technically root an old iphone if that works. Otherwise I‘d probably buy a decently priced handheld.
Building one from scratch is a bit much next to my ubuntu home server with 14 docker containers, two pcs (one linux, one windows) and 6 pets. :) But i would opt for a kit or something if it’s better than prebuilt (ie anbernic).
Its so awesome that so many people are giving good suggestions. Thank you very much.
I understand. Thanks for explaining.
