Progress in one field often results in progress elsewhere, too. Apart from that, people working on projects on the moon would probably do the same work here, just under less good circumstances. It really is not a question of "throw enough money/personnel at the problems". What needs to be done on earth is very different from what's going on up there.
Beehaw is a Lemmy instance. However, they defederated from two huge instances, because they're open registration, and the four BH admins felt overwhelmed with the incoming traffic and unable to manually block trolls, so they decided to just separate from a large chunk of content rather than get it under control.
I'm on one of the two defederated instances, sh.itjust.works, and I can neither see what's posted there, nor can a BH user see what I post (or what's up on our server, for that matter.
The other big instance is lemmy.world.
BH has very specific rules for what's okay over there and what's not. Check them out and see if you're willing to live with the defederation for the sake of what their admins define as safety.
Yeah, the solution is more tools for users to filter content. There's also been a discussion around general nsfw vs porn, which would also be nice to have as a deeper way to customise the experience on an individual level.
In general, I'm much more in favour of personal ability to filter, sort and categorise other posters, communities and instances, to really make it "your Lemmy", and less of a focus on making decisions for us on an admin/mod level.
Lemmygrad is something else, on a level with exploding heads. I even try to avoid lemmy.ml, because the devs are tankies, too... but at least there are normal users there, too. The lemmygrad ban is absolutely fine.
I can't say I'm particularly thrilled about decision making by committee. I'd feel a lot more reassured if I knew the server in good and competent hands, rather than a "mob rules" system of governance. I'll certainly prepare to move elsewhere if it becomes clear that the instance moves in a direction I'd feel uncomfortable with (such as overmoderation or willy-nilly defederation that'd rob me of content).
Yes, both kbin.social and lemm.ee are federated with sh.itjust.works
I think it just needs to register once on an instance, which still means it won't pop up on many others, unless someone specifically searches for it -- and why would they do that, if they're just browsing the community list?
What's most regrettable is the timing. Just when Lemmy had a big growth spurt, they cut off a big part of the community. We'll likely see this happen again in 2 weeks, when Reddit shuts down all 3rd party mobile apps, and again when they close old.reddit. I hope that some of the issues Lemmy currently faces will be fixed by then.
