  • Sounds wild, but there are surprisingly many people who use Arch on a server.

  • Oh, I’ve read lots of those comments. Truly fascinating stuff, and I think there is a reason. Here are some guesses.

    1. That user is suffering from some sort of mental issues. This seems like the obvious option, but I don’t think it’s the most likely one.
    2. It’s a social experiment. Someone is using it to gather information on how people respond to hostility online. I would love to carry out an experiment like that, but can’t justify the negativity that would be inherently involved in it. I’m really curious to find out how different instances, communities or even other social medias respond. Are some places more hostile or mature than others? What does it take to get your messages deleted or account banned? Who knows.
    3. It’s a piece of online art. That account is used for making a statement about online debates, hostility and the ways people react.
    4. It’s a personal goal. Who has the most downvoted account on Lemmy? That’s an achievement of sorts, I guess. This is the kind of stuff people do when they’ve already completed the main quest and most of the side quests.
    5. Plain old trolling. Sort of like point 4, but for entertainment purposes instead of questionable bragging rights.
  • This level of toxicity is really impressive. Can I get sone sarin sauce on that plutonium burger, please?

  • You are appreciated the way you are. Here, have some flowers to cheer you up 💐🌸🌻

  • Yeah, that’s an entirely valid option. However, 15 €/month is a bit difficult to justify, given the quality I would get in return. The family plan might make more sense though.

  • Oooh, free insults. Yes please.

  • Are you able to block YT ads on Safari + AdGuard? That’s the combo I have, and it did work for a while, but nowadays, all YT videos stop at the 1 min mark. Seems like YT is beginning to block people who use ad blockers.

  • Oh, they certainly are practical. Especially when you’re setting up a meeting with people living in different cities.

However, when you look at the time zones of China, you begin to notice things. Turns out, 12 o’clock has nothing to do with midday, but at least meeting times are nice and easy.

  • Sounds to me that even though your massless clock would be always right, time doesn’t really mean anything in that situation. It’s like having a ruler for measuring how purple yesterday is.

  • AKA solar time. It’s really quite natural. Man made time zones are truly bizarre.

  • This sounds pretty cool. Are there other types of restrictions you can have?

  • If the cheap options suck, people might end up buying the more expensive one. At least that’s what Google hopes you will do.

  • Yeah, I skipped that site entirely and found the relevant information elsewhere.

  • Hmm.. I should probably look into this a bit better next time I click “accept only necessary”. Who knows how many times that has happened to me as well. Do you use a specific plugin for keeping an eye on these things?

  • Oh it’s JavaScript again. Seems like that’s the root cause and solution to most web related problems these days.

  • White listing cookies is the way to go. Everything else just gets deleted after a few seconds.

  • Could also be a location thing. If you’re in the US, the companies can legally stab you in the back and suck your blood, whereas in the EU they have to let me know what they’re up to.

  • I’m using firefox focus when clicking unfamiliar links online, so it has no fancy plugins or anything like that. It asks for my consent, which I don’t give. Then, the site just tells me to sod off, if I don’t like their tracking cookies. Basically, none of the site is available to me.

  • Sounds great. I hope at least one of these communities becomes the main community for capybaras. Defederation tends to cause fragmentation like this, so I guess there’s always some demand for new communities that aren’t on unpopular instances.
