  • Last time I shared this I was downvoted to hell but I'll say it again because it's the truth:

My good friend in Saudi works for a firm that frequently works for the Prince. He claims that the Prince is trying to progress a more inclusive and tolerant culture in modern Saudi Arabia.

Obviously there's a ton of issues with the way they conduct government right now. But at least it's worth noting that there is talk of positive change. It has to start somewhere.

  • Good. Unfortunately this is the only way we'll learn to stop giving vital information, or even truthful information, to any and every site that asks for it.

I sympathize with those whose data was leaked but I don't agree that there will ever be sufficient security or protections of privacy.

  • They're familiar with the phrase. That's why they have so much security detail.

One of these, though, one of them is going to slip up and be in the wrong place and the wrong time. Then it is only natural that they are killed.

I know we're not supposed to incite violence on this platform. What I'm talking about is simply an historical cycle and it will inevitably happen.

  • I think it's more complicated than that, my friend.

Not many people have the luxury of choosing an occupation that aligns with their ideals. A person may have taken a job at Apple out of necessity because it's all that was offered, or perhaps to maintain their legal status in the country (H-1B visa), or because they have burgeoning student debts, or maybe they were as yet unaware of the corporate trend towards employee exploitation.

Anyway, putting on the blame on the one's being laid off instead of on the one's laying off is not helping anyone except the C-suite of Apple.

  • This is why I find Wikipedia problematic. Anyone can change an entry and if enough people work together they can change it permanently and resist efforts to change it back. It seems inevitable to me that it will lose integrity over time.

I'd love for someone to convince me otherwise, though...

  • I've heard something to the effect that approximately 80% of all internet traffic passes through Facebook and Google. Unfortunately I can't find anything to substantiate that claim but it's sounds plausible.

I remember the early internet. It was a wild place but at least it was fair and balanced. Now every click on every page is designed to serve the for profit attention economy. Kinda sucks in comparison.

  • It depends on so many factors. My local government is all boomers and older. My voice and lack of experience isn't as influential as the others. Although we've discussed issues like preserving naturally occurring affordable housing, it's clear that final decisions are at the whims of people who are unaffected by the housing crisis.

The real solution is for many, many, many younger people to get involved. We can't sit on our asses, complaining on the internet, and expect anything to happen.

Not talking about you, of course. Just continuing on from your comment...

  • I spoke with an American Rabbi the other day who flatly denied that al Nakba, the expulsion of the Palestinians during the formation of Israel in 1948, ever happened. I was shocked. It was like a holocaust denier but in reverse.

As the conversation went on he slyly admitted that "maybe there were only a small number of people living there". He's convinced that the land grab is justified because it's only a few people who were displaced. I asked him if the "small number" of Israelis murdered on October 7th is justified...

It's amazing how our brains are so biased towards selective information and selective history. He was obviously an intelligent man, but he simply couldn't admit the well known history.

I realize now that all of us have this potential to be bewildered if our bodily identities are threatened. It's not unique to Israelis or Palestinians or anyone else. It's a universally human tendency. That's my belief.

Anyway, I love all of my brothers and sisters no matter their ethnicity or religion.

  • As someone who's just joined the local government I can say that the trolley murder system is very much entrenched. I'm trying to slow down the trolley but it would probably be best to tear up the tracks, melt the iron and build a monument for posterity.

  • I recently joined my township's planning commission. It was suspiciously easy to join. Anyway, learning about city planning and ordinances is really fascinating. I highly recommend people get involved with their local boards and commissions.
