This would be a reason for me to start using Mastodon. I currently don't, and never used Twitter, because the value i got wasn't worth the pain. Mastodon looks like it would be less pain, but there isn't any real value drawing me in. If my country or province spun up instances with verified accounts and media releases, I'd be very interested. If they made their own crappy app, thanks, I'll pass.

Not to mention that, if you're speaking English, if not the majority then a disproportionate minority is going to be white men. And there's the point. Your very statement implies there are only two groups, white authors and not white authors, which would be a lot more obvious if you hadn't replaced "white" with "(different colour)". So what was your reason for doing that, particularly in the context of punching up/down?

Part of it is the idea of punching down. Making fun of the majority/norm for sticking with typical behavior is safe, making fun of targeted groups isn't okay.

Having watched from the outside, you guys were getting more for less for decades before ACA got passed. Then, for a brief moment, things got better overall and the downward trend continued. Blaming the cause of the one blip where quality improved for some small portion of the population (estimated to be over 10 million) for the overall downward trend before and after sounds silly.

Realistically, single payer isn't going to pass without Democrats holding the house, senate, and presidency at levels that bypass filibusters. And then the Republicans will drag their feet as much as possible to do everything they can to delay progress.

Trump was hard on China until Ivanka got her patents approved. After that, he was remarkably friendly with them. And now Russia is friendly with China. I'm sure those tariffs will disappear once he's been paid.

There has been work to replicate the capabilities in Taiwan on US soil. While it hasn't been going great, it has been progressing. At some point it is quite possible that Taiwan will no longer be as strategic a partner with America as they are now, which doesn't bode well for their continued assistance from America. But if there comes a time that China will take Taiwan you can be guaranteed that everything possible will be done to reduce the risk of technology transfer.

It's fun living in colder climates and having unironic discussions where people are agreeing that -10° C is a nice winter temperature since it's still relatively warm, but you don't have to worry about slushy, frozen roads or high humidity.

I've had multiple cats, all trained in one degree or other. Getting a cat to do what you want is kind of hard. Getting them to do something they like to do on command is pretty easy. I had a cat that would play catch, usually with uninflated balloons. I'd try to make her do backflips for the catch. All my cats were trained to stay off the counters and tables (when we were around). But I also recognize that cats don't see us as masters and authorities, so you bet they would go on the counters when we weren't around, for instance.

As a Canadian, this is the first time I heard the term half-staff, while I've heard half-mast numerous times. So I believe it's much more an American thing and not a North American thing.
