  • I'm Australian but don't live there. It worries me how far right it's getting. Australia being a very sporty place means transgender people in sport is a huge wedge that the Nazis can use. I've had to "disown" a bunch of family - including my mother, who I thought I learned my values from!

  • From a consumer perspective it's a good solution for internet in remote areas and Ontario has a lot of remote areas. I used it for a couple of years when my only other option was a local wireless provider with an expensive high speed plan with advertised downloads up to 10Mbps, but actually never got anywhere near that. I'm lucky that I now have fibre and my starlink hardware is collecting dust in the shed.

  • Same - just as I started watching he was saying the democrats had weaponised law enforcement against their political opponents, on the day that said he would crack down on political opponents in universities. (I know he's abusing law enforcement in many other ways - it just struck me that the that the university protest crack down was one of the big stories of the day. Such a stark example of "every accusation is a confession")

  • I also live in an area with frequent power disruption. We have a backup generator. It is more than enough to power the electronics in our propane gas range, but nowhere near enough to power an electric range.

  • It might be the correct deal, but it worries me. I can only imagine the people saying he wants to be a dictator are those that want a Putin style election to install another puppet. I know they have to have elections at some point - it's just a worry!

  • Oh shit. I'm not a citizen yet, only a PR. Was planning to apply as soon has I reach 3 years. I'll struggle with that. I'm Australian, so I was born with an allegiance to the British monarch, but to actually say it - urgh.

  • Yep, it's just evil to their own staff. It seems every time I have to call some call centre these days, when I finally get to a human the conversation starts something like "I've just spent 40 fucking minutes trying to get to talk to a person and I'm really pissed off. I know that's not your fault and I apologise in advance if I struggle to contain my frustrations while we talk. Now.."

  • When you say "applied in the other direction" - I read that as granting, rather than revoking, citizenship. Which doesn't really make sense? I assume you mean an evil government revoking citizenship of good people, rather than this proposal for a good government to revoke the citizenship of an evil person.

  • That was my first reaction too. Did you read the text of the petition? What he's doing isn't just politics, he's actively working to erase Canada. There must be some level of anti-Canada behaviour (really bad phrasing, but I can't think of anything better and you know what I mean) that warrants revocation of citizenship?

    • Elon Musk has engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada;
    • He has used his wealth and power to influence our elections;
    • He has now become a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty; and
    • The attempts of Elon Musk to attack Canadian sovereignty must be addressed.
  • Facts, by definition, are devoid of context. They don't change depending on who states them! How can you have a reasonable conversation about anything at all if you can't agree on some baseline facts. That's how the fascists operate - everything the orange turd says is a fact, so you can't reason with them.

  • I'm tech literate - I've been on the internet since I connected the university I was working at in the early '90s. I was a system/network engineer until around '15. Choosing an instance is a hurdle that can't be overlooked. Now that I'm "in" it seems trivial, but it delayed my joining Lemmy for quite a while. No other social media has it, and it just felt wrong. And now that I've been here for 2 years I still don't understand a lot about how it works - like, if I decide I don't like the instance I'm on now, I assume I'll lose my history of posts and comments if I move? Again, it's probably trivial for me to go find out, but we're just not used to putting any effort into our social media platform. It's a good thing for that to change, but we can't ignore the fact that we are asking people to change when they come here.
