My wife described it as having the vibes of quiet morning hangover sadness after a wild night of partying. I just picture a really sad hungover guy looking out a window at a rainy landscape and thinking to himself I was once a party rocker in the house tonight, but what am I now?
I know it's hard to believe, but bare with me. Puppies are actually lizards. It's a weight thing. They don't have enough gravitational pull to keep their own internal heat, so they need to absorb it from the sun. You're probably wondering why they're okay indoors, but that's because the light molecules reach them through the air.
Source: I read a LOT of /r/shittyaskscience back in my day and I remember how this works trust me.
Secondary Source: Scientists.
Tertiary Source: When I say scientists I actually mean the Bible.
Quaternary Source: When I say the Bible, I really mean the voices in my head.
Wait, didn't you hear? You must be part of the lucky 10,000! Scientists discovered last year that dogs under 35ish pounds are actually classified as birds!
Thank you for calling attention to this! I've been trying to raise awareness about why people should avoid lemmy.ml like the plague. My first post on Lemmy was on this thread created by the same person that made the post you linked to. I had noticed the mod action they called out where someone was banned for posting an Axios article about the Chinese succession plan for the reason of "Orientalism". I appreciate that Lemmy is decentralized and that at the end of the day your server admin matters first and foremost, but I do really hope the views of those top devs never lead to problems with the software itself. At least it's all open source and they would be called out if they ever tried anything shady.
I think a more serious and probable question is what would happen if your doctor had a heart attack during surgery. Doesn't take a degree from Hollywood Upstairs Medical School for that to happen!
This isn't necessarily always true. PCSX2, the main PS2 emulator, for example needs a BIOS file that can only be obtained from an actual PS2 (or "illegally"). I'm not sure why that emulator requires it when others don't. The closest thing to an explanation I could find online just said "legal issues", but didn't go into details. That makes me suspect that there was pushback from Sony about the emulator. So if such emulation laws were to be written they absolutely should protect in stone the right to create and use emulators. If a company can find a loophole to block you, they will.
I've always found the Bible to be so arbitrary. A bunch of old dudes at a few councils 1000+ years ago decided what they wanted their core beliefs to be. And then they decided what books they wanted to recognize as legitimate in the Bible. The only difference between which books are "apocryphal" or "heretical" and which are "inspired by God" is which books those old men chose and which they rejected. Why is the fever dream that is Revelations considered legitimate when other more coherent books aren't? Understanding how arbitrary it all is played a big role in my deconversion from Evangelical Christianity. The people who tout the Bible as the "one truth" rarely understand how arbitrary the process that got them that book was. They would spin some tale about how "God spoke through those men" or whatever, but it's all just bullshit excuses. You can imbue any event with supernatural backing when it conveniently fits your narrative.
And I'm not even someone who thinks that "all religion is poison" or whatever. Just the "Bible based" belief system that treats the Bible as infallible. I think logic and emotion are just as important of tools when talking about morality and religious guidance as the Bible is.
In the past I would have agreed with you, but in the age of increasingly sophisticated AI being able to nearly perfectly imitate people's voices or images, I think we need to start asking more of social media companies. When truth starts looking indistinguishable from fiction we're going to need to find new ways of parsing which is which. Fact checking will be extremely important.
I've just stopped unsubscribing from email lists these days and instead I mark them as spam on Gmail so that Gmail can identify what they are for everyone else. Saw an article a while back with political fundraiser people begging people to stop marking them as spam and its just like, that's what happens when you keep subscribing me to new lists I never signed up for after I unsubscribe from the ones I'm on. If I go out of my way to inform you that email spam won't convince me to donate (which I do plenty of on my own without prompting) then you should listen to me.
Ugh, I knew a lot of other European countries overreacted to Fukushima, but I hadn't heard much about Italy specifically. Sounds like they didn't have as much nuclear energy to start with (unlike Germany), but they had big plans to increase their usage of nuclear energy to around a quarter of their energy grid until they halted it all in response to Fukushima. The Wikipedia page about it is tragic.
Germany in particular pisses me off so much. No country bought into the fear mongering about nuclear energy after Fukushima as much as Germany did. Shutting down nuclear power plants in the face of climate change is so incredibly irresponsible. For all of their faults, I give a lot of credit to the US and France for not shying away from using nuclear energy.
I, for one, vote in support of defederation from Threads. No reason to allow Meta to use our content to boost engagement on their for-profit platform. And pull users away from places like Lemmy at that.
Not only that. You no longer exist. As you were at birth, that is. And after some amount of time every so often in your life, you will continue to be unrecognizable to the version of you from x years in the past. Your cells die off and new cells are created until you are literally composed of different matter than you once were. The closest thing to a constant thing tying you together would be the electrical signals in your brain. Memories. Like computer code sent from one PC to another. Also the DNA determining how your body is built.
It's the classic Ship of Thesseus problem. If you replace a ship's parts one piece at a time over many years until the old parts of the ship no longer remain, is it still the same ship? And in the same way, are you still the same you? Maybe our lives are full of many different people tied together only by our thoughts, memories, and genetic code.
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you lima bean? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Beans, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Adzuki, and I have over 300 confirmed bowls cooked. I am trained in garbanzo warfare and I'm the top cook in the entire US bean forces. You are nothing to me but just another customer. I will feed you beans with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fava. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of bean providers across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, marrowfat. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your lentils. You're fucking cooked, kidney bean. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can feed you over seven hundred different recipes, and that's just with my black beans. Not only am I extensively trained in pinto combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the Great Northern Bean Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little split pea. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have prepared your fucking mouth. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn soybean. I will shit beans all over you and you will drown in them. You're gonna be fucking full, baked bean.
Not being able to open image in new tab and download them anymore has made it functionally useless for me.
