  • No I know, I'm similar in that way. My point was that the inability to take compliments well isn't related to this facet of personality.

  • Oh, that's not extroversion or introversion. It's a secret third thing.

  • I could do that too, but it wouldn't be a viable way to put this in front of family and friends who are a bit dense around anything attached to a keyboard.

  • I'll update everyone if it gets off the ground!

  • Thanks, I sent them an account request fully stating my intentions for them to consider. I'll circle back with a link if this gets off the ground!

  • It's clearly an Earthbound enemy, this portends the return of Giygas. Oh shit... I can't live my life as a telephone, my wife's going to be livid.

  • That does look like it'd be worth a look for its own sake, but their TOS forbids the kind of content I'd be posting.

  • That's what I was worried about, which is why I first searched and then asked around for a PeerTube instance focused on anonymous pirated content (never know your luck). I'm not here to get anyone into trouble they aren't asking for.

My ultimate dream would be to run a live broadcast like Schrab Home Video where everyone can watch together concurrently. I know that some people on Twitch play old cartoons (e.g. Puppet Jared's Cartoon Dumpster) and I'm not sure how he gets away with it - and I wouldn't really want to become a janky mocap virtual beggar if that's what it takes.

  • I've kept copies of all my editing work in OpenShot for the past year or so and it's all pretty evergreen, so it would be pretty trivial to start consistently pumping out sequentially coherent broadcasts as soon as I've got a platform.

  • Good note. I didn't think Jellyfin would allow you to broadcast to strangers, which is the (admittedly piratical) idea here. I would also prefer to remain anonymous to avoid any legal entanglements, so that would be a consideration if I went that route.

  • We had a lot of things pretty good. Since we don't have TV, I've spent the last year every weekend creating a 2.5 hour block of tailored programming to recreate the experience of Saturday morning cartoons for my kid, with selections from ~60 of the best (and some bad) cartoons from the last several decades, animated music videos, unearthed funny old clips, and modern indie animations, often with seasonal themes. Halloween is the most fun.

My toons are objectively better than the Saturday morning block ever was, and it takes hours every week to gather clips, edit, and manage where we're at with every show. I sometimes wish I could share it with a larger crowd but it's really not worth the expense, legal exposure, or effort - not to mention it's more special since it's just for my kiddo. I get to share the culture with him, with the crusts cut off. They don't have to put up with commercials, bad reception, or the constant ear-splitting blare of homophobia that was the nineties.

All that to say, that's the big picture too. Every generation we try to make things a little better for the young ones. Sometimes we're pretty envious of them, but we'd be failures if things were completely better when we were kids - and they'll have to work hard too, because in some ways we have been failing.

  • There's a reason Dan Harmon bitched about serialisation for about a decade, it's a crutch for weak writing. Episodic is just a far better format in general, and basically all streaming is going far in the opposite direction because they've let their own half-baked binge metrics dictate what kinds of shows they make.

It's become a bit of a hobby for me to point out how media changes based on the incentives. All art is beholden to its support structures, and most of these streaming platforms have put algorithms in control because we keep on failing to learn the lessons of the past century or so.

  • I regret that merely voting was never going to save Palestine. I occasionally regret fleeing the states with my wife and child because I couldn't come to terms with what it could cost my family if I died resisting fascism. I regret the loss of friends who fell victim to "culture war" and vile propaganda. I have many regrets.
