While i find your derogatory comments about concussed goldfish disappointingly predictable, the point is by saying 'both sides are the same' or 'both are as bad as the other' isn't really a political opinion.

Its a statement that withdraws from engaging in the differences in party positions on specific subject or policy positions by broad brushing them as the same.

For instance, a flounder might say to a butterfly fish, that, goldfish (concussed or not), are all the same, just to stop talking to the butterfly fish and get out of its reef! :)

Sometimes i find people will also use it as a 'discussion shut down' when they don't want to get pulled into a larger conversation about politics.

They have their reasons, like knowing they have little knowledge on the subject, or knowing the person they're talking to and not wishing to engage with them too heavily (i may be guilty of employing this tactic at times).

I really hope its a jury trial, and they prove to be very useful. Interesting strategy Google went for.

So i just just discovered these communities tonight, but these seem unique and awesome!

Plane travel i think is Australian's biggest problem on this. I once had a friend spitting daggers at me for suggesting the amount of waste caused by travelling to a place like Europe every year needs to be stopped (read: trips spaced out further) until we access a different less carbon intensive transport.

I thought the point i's making was really, really moderate considering the impacts, but my friend turned on me like i'd just insulted their mothers favourite budgie.

It was a surreal moment.

I found the whole 'cake day' thing on Reddit a bit immature myself, kind of like a stale remnant from the excitement and exuberance of the internet before it was dominated by a few massive companies.

By the time i left reddit my feelings towards those traditions were like yours. They seemed a bit hollow, over-egged.

Times have changed, Lemmy and its user-base are a reaction to the dominant internet campanies. With that i'd hope we can be more thoughtful about building an online experience thats healthy and sober.

To that point, i think marking an anniversary has a certain importance. I'd hope on Lemmy this kind of thing is approached with a more subtle maturity though.

But at the end of the day, what one person takes away from text, and what another person takes away from the same text can be surprisingly different. So maybe I just read all those cake day messages in the wrong light.

I reckon you guys are on the right track with your comments. Something to add in relation to why streaming services are introducing an ad tier. Introducing adverts introduces variable pricing for the streaming services. Meaning they can earn the same base rate, but for say the next season of Bridgerton, or one of their other really popular shows they can make a kind of 'super profit' by selling the ad space on top of their base rate per subscriber account.

Sometimes means testing can become more expensive and time consuming than just getting the benefit out the door to everyone.

Plus its less popular because you inevitably have the murdoch-whingers crying about the less wealthy being undeserving by dint of their lack of wealth, and also people complaining over edge cases that miss out.
