  • Yes, your description is part of the genesis of my question. Where did this all come from because without knowing the origin of why western culture stared disallowing some important and strong emotions to be displayed by men we can strive to change it.

  • The reason I used robotic instead of stoic in my initial post is that I see stoicism as less about refraining from emotions but learning how to control emotions. That is recognize that you are human and you will have a wide variety of emotions, and you should have all of those emotions. But with stoicism the goal is to recognize the emotion you are having and not allow it to control you.

You can be mad or even fucking piss off angry but you should still have that higher, separate thought that control the emotion and allow it to come out in ways that don't create a negative impact on yourself and others.

My post was more about where in history did the western culture evolve to punish men from having any emotion beyond anger, ambivalence and to a limited degree humor.

  • Well shit. I actually thought this was no stupid questions - I need to pay better attention I guess. Thanks for pointing it out. I will re-submit there instead.

  • Maybe stoic is a better word for it. But someone that shows little range of emotions - angry, ambivalent, and happy (on a limited basis) but nothing else.

  • Into the wild when he discovers that human existence isn't meant to be lived in isolation and then dies a few days later in total isolation.

The end of Saving Private Ryan always gets me as well.

  • At the very least I wish that every morning he steps on a 4 sided die and a handful of Lego's.

  • Yet if there is any discussion on increasing taxes on these fucks all of a sudden it's government overreach on the "job creators"

  • Digital license plates are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist -

But it is a money maker for the manufacturer at a subscription price of $29.99 / month

  • It was said below but I really think that there needs to be more people that are willing to run for office with a more progressive message.

I know it's not as sexy as revolution or CEO-cide but it really is a better way to make changes without fucking the country up completely.

So how the fuck do you run for office ? I don't know but there are resources that can help. If you don't want to run that's fair but as you mentioned the time to just sit around and bitch online in an echo chamber is done. Progressives are going to have to find a way to make their voices heard and in a way that isn't talking down to people.

Note: I get the anger and the desire to want to scare the fuck out of the ruling class. But murder isn't the only thing that the ruling class is scared of, they also don't want people to vote for their own self-interest. They don't want the people to demand billionaires pay more in taxes. And a significant group of progressive politicians would scare the shit out of the established ruling class.

  • Well the good news (/s) is that they won't be sitting in a warehouse - they will instead be sold to one of many conflicts around the world to "test" their product.

"never let a disagreement go unarmed"

    • weapons manufactures (probably)
  • For the last 50,000 years or more we had to walk and move constantly to survive as a species so it makes sense that our bodies would have evolved to reward us for moving.

  • While I don't think the lack of quality journalism is all due to OP not paying for it (I have no clue if they do or don't) but there is a lot of complaining on Lemmy and Reddit about paywalls which is annoying. The idea that people want quality journalism but get pissed off when those journalist and news organizations asked to get paid for it is ridiculous.

  • It gets so tiring to hear over and over and over again that the only way to solve the budget problems is through austerity. You know there is another side that can help with reducing a deficit called taxes? Specifically taxing billionaires. But it seems that only the poor must suffer when making things more efficient.

  • I'm nerdy enough to want this be UFO/UAPs but seriously with all the different types of aircraft and drones that are on the market or not too difficult to build I kinda think this is human interference.

  • In the lead-up to November, LAist found through a public records review that—while on the Orange County Board of Supervisors during the height of the pandemic—Steel [the Republican candidate] had awarded a $1.2 million contract for meals for seniors to a marketing and printing company involved in her congressional election campaign

Elon Musk’s America PAC spent nearly $800,000 supporting Steel’s campaign and more than $500,000 opposing Tran, while the pro-cryptocurrency super PAC Fairshake spent roughly $2.8 million helping Steel.

Steel really was a "for the people" type of candidate. /s

  • I think a lot of people, including me just shut out all the crap after the election - So I don't think it's that people have a difficult time understanding it I think people just didn't continue to follow the news and the see the final numbers a week or so later.

  • you're right. I have to admit after the election I shut out lots of political media and really missed that it was closer than I thought.

  • I think the big media companies probably knew this too but needed to create a false horse race for ratings and clicks

I mean, either every single pollster in every major news organization was just terribly off on their prediction or there was a push from the ownership to make this election 'more interesting'. (This is my own conspiracy theory and I have no sources to back this bullshit up with)
