  • It's an online game where your position is important. Dodging to the wrong area can get you killed. It also uses both your computer and the server to manage things, to avoid cheating. In the original, there used to be massive problems with desyncs, where your computer thinks you're in one area, the server thinks you're somewhere else, and so the instructions sent from one to the other caused headaches with aiming and especially avoiding attacks. Most of the competitive players probably still have a macro bound to type /desync. If you have a bad connection, the desync is almost unavoidable. This will get you killed fast.

  • Supposedly gaben has threatened to release code in a death switch that would make every steam user able to play their games without phoning home.

I know that I would never buy another game if steam went down the toilet. Piracy was fun when I was a kid, and I bet it could be fun again.

  • I doubt anyone will have to be told to have kids. Putting people in misery will leave them grasping at anything to have a moment's respite of pleasure. Right now they can do that with hobbies and 'toys.' In the future? Only the embrace of your fellow miserable hopefully-only-half-kin will be an option, and kids will start popping out.

  • Was there ever any marten mentioned besides the pine marten with the red cloak in the martin the warrior book? I think there was one in the pearls of lutra, on the island kingdom?

Shoot, it's been so long I can't remember.

  • Wouldn't 40k, depending on who and where, be something like, "Open meal package. Place 200g water in package. Close package and shake for 40 seconds. Open package and eat." Civilian worlds you can just make up whatever, just like the scenario designers do. Want a US-lite world? Got one. Want a world reminiscent of 1800s UK? Got two.

  • Noooooo. There was an article in the last 6 months about someone connecting a windows xp to the internet just to see what happened, and within 10 minutes it had been scanned and infected. They repeated the experiment several times.

It's child's play (like, literally script kiddie level) to run automated scans and if a vulnerability, like a really old operating system, is found to then attack it.

  • You can see it in the various 'asklemmy' communities. When I was left wondering if we were being brigaded by folks from nostupidquestions or having a bot trying to drive engagement with simpleminded stuff, I knew the original lemmy feeling was about to be gone.

It makes me a little grumpy that I have to experience the eternal september.

  • I think someone mentioned once that there are places where rabbits are legally required to be sold with their head still attached, because otherwise it was possible to pass off a decapitated cat as a rabbit.
