  • To toot the anticapitalist horn, antitrust and regulations and anything such is fundamentally in opposition to our economic system. We're constantly fighting the system, just to get a liveable life. We fought just to get 8 hours a week and some economists in the 19th century and early 20th century imagined we right now would be having 15 hour work weeks. Guess why we don't do 15 hours a week. Because the economic system, capitalism, benefits more the more we work. Capitalism would love to take us back to 12 hour days 6 days a week. Actually capitalism would want us working every single waking hour and also in our sleep if we could be productive in our sleep.

This is why I'm a socialist, because I don't see why we maintain a system we need to keep fighting with when we could work on replacing it with a better system that et don't need to fight with.

  • We already know lowering the cut doesn't make us pay less. All it does is put more money into the pockets of the publisher.

And I very much doubt Valve's cut is a reason indie game can't be profitable. There are asset flips going up on Steam on a daily basis. If asset flipping wasn't profitable we wouldn't see them propping up like mushrooms after rain. When asset flips are more profitable than an indie game there's something wrong with that game.

  • Cmon man. You call it a complete lie and then proceed to lie through your teeth?

It affected EVGA GPUs during the beta, EVGA accepted the responsibility and offered to replace the cards. However after the beta the game also bricked Gigabyte and laptop (which I think came straight from Nvidia) GPUs, so the issue wasn't exclusive to EVGA.

As for EVGA no longer making cards. Their cards were highly regarded because they made quality cards. The reason they stopped making cards wasn't because they did a shitty job, the reason was Nvidia. The official reasoning EVGA gave was that Nvidia made it difficult to maintain consistent profit margins, but the rumors are that EVGA saw the 40 Series specs along with the demands Nvidia had for the manufacturers and didn't want anything to do with that shit. And rightfully so how poorly the 40 series was received.

  • We could split the difference and users could get auto-notified if their vote was viewed and by whom. That way it’s a two-way street. The mod/admin can see your votes, the users know that their vote was accessed by that mod.

It would be pointless to do. Anyone can view your votes without notifying you. Just set up your own instance, download the data (that you need to do anyway because of how activitypub works) and then just open up the database with a different software to access the data. No notification can be sent because the application doesn't know the data was accessed.

Second choice would be that all users are anonymized by a hash so that bad vote actors can be removed via their hash being associated with malicious or other bad acting, but to discover who individuals are the admin would have to do the legwork of follonf multiple posts/ comments to associate the hash.

This opens a door to vote manipulation. If you can't verify users someone can send random hashes.

Otherwise hide the votes if trust of anonymity is paramount.

The votes still exist in the activitypub. They're already publicly available, the question is how accessible they should be because right now if you want to track downvotes you need to put in some effort. Upvotes you can already easily check from any mbin instance

  • You could make the saame argument against commenting, say the wrong thing and you get harassed. But what do you do with someone harassing you? You block them. What do you do when someone is harassing you by downvoting you? You most likely suck it up because you don't know who is downvoting you.

I would argue it's more a tool against harassment than a tool for harassment, especially since anyone determined enough can already access that information.

  • Your votes already aren't private, they're simply not easily accessible (by the average user). I won't get into the technical details but the short version is that every instance owner who is federated with your instance already knows how you've voted. Someone could make a website right now that collects votes and shows how someone has voted or who upvoted/downvoted a post or comment. It's already public information.

  • Because the user acquisition is how they'll end up making money. The more people in their ecosystem the more people they have who are willing to spend in their ecosystem.

The free games is probably a good avenue for them to get some potential buyers.

  • There are language that have lived for centuries without any lexical rules. Any value lost is only in the the eyes of the preceptivists. Language can and will easily live on with all the internal inconsistencies. In fact language rules are usually built around those inconsistencies because the language people speak is more important than whatever rules purists come up with.

  • I get what you're saying but it's still supporting the war. It's like if someone grew up bigoted because of their upbringing. Guess what, they're still a bigot.

Your choice to be ignorant about the world doesn't excuse you when the world bites you in the ass. We can only hope the war at their doorstep is a wakeup call.

  • Yes and no but mostly no. Prescriptivists are are great when you need to build a general structure of a language, but language can and will evolve without any intelligent design by the people using it.

The primary purpose of language is to communicate ideas and most of the times the linguistic rules are not necessary to convey an idea.

  • You got it because it's not the US telling Ukraine to fight for the last man, it's Ukrainians deciding to fight for the last man. If they believe they can achieve something more who are we to question it.

Opposing sending more men into the meat grinder just means you're in favor of Ukraine surrendering to Russia, who are now the actual fascists.

  • If at could start at blank slate then base 12 would make a better foundation, but base 10 is far too ingrained into every aspect of our life. It's much easier to convert time into base 10 than it would be to convert the world into base 12.

  • Because Microsoft sucks and Google sucks and if you install Linux there's 50% chance it'll cure someone's cancer. Also if you're at a bar and your pickup line is "I use arch" it'll be like the fucking Niagara falls. If you're into guys even their ass will go sploosh when they hear that line.

What I'm getting at is that we're just a superior being.

  • I'm pretty sure some of them are objectively broken. I had a mission where the mission givers partner was seeing someone else and I had to figure out who. The process of figuring out who the person was was pretty cool. Outside of some vague physical traits my leading clue was the mystery persons partners job position. I had to look up every restaurant, break into every single restaurant, find all the people who worked that position, find where they live, break into their apartments to find who their partner was and if they match who I'm looking for.

Eventually I was 99% sure I got the right person, but I needed proof they were seeing each other. I combed their entire apartment, found nothing. I combed the partners apartment, found nothing. I checked their workplaces, found nothing. I tailed both of them the entire day, still found nothing. I even checked their mailboxes and found nothing. I literally ran out of ideas how to solve the case because I found nothing.

Turned me away from the game because I got this cool investigation with some really out the box thinking, and then didn't get rewarded because I didn't find that last piece of information.
