  • This is the direct path from neoliberalism/conservatism to fascism that some of us have been warning about for decades.

Simply put, choosing the "lesser of two evils" over decades means you're sliding towards evil, regardless.

  • Source?

  • A few remarks:

    • Mullvad is not the only acceptable choice just for torrenting. If your objective is just to subvert copyright trolls, any (non-Israeli) VPN that has a track record of not keeping logs will do the job.
    • FitGirl is great and all but let's not forget DODI. One thing I seriously dislike about FG is while she gets the best compression rates, it's at the cost of like 6x the time to unpack the games. There are probably still more reputable sources for games
    • If you want to use your computer without everything being on the VPN, you will have to either use containers (Linux), virtual machines, or explore split-tunneling features in your VPN client if available.

  • I wish for once this country could pass an unambiguously good law to protect people's privacy.

  • Biden hitched the dying empire's wagon to Israel and Ukraine, and now Trump is pretending the rest of the world isn't fed up with US's antics. Sorry, man. Alternatives are rising. Belt and Road exists. Nobody likes us anymore. Many don't even fear us anymore. These genocidal and violent morons are playing the game like it's the 90s without realizing the rules have been updated since then.

  • After learning about the absurdity of copyright law in the USA I'm not really convinced or compelled to give a cent to these companies. It's not just paying for the content. It's giving these big corporations money so that they can lobby for laws that are against the interests of most people.

Italy seems to be leading the way to an even more bleak future. "Bleak future" seems to really be the order of the day, huh?

  • my take was everyone should be illiterate. good work.

  • Earlier today I went onto youtube in a private window and looked up a video for some old video game. Then I went back to the homepage. I was just smacked with rightwing and sexualized content in the recommendations once the home page was populated. There are a lot of good content makers on YouTube, but it's an absolutely trash website.

I don't know if there have been studies on this, but I would not be surprised if social media platforms (particularly YouTube and Facebook) in the last two months have pivoted hard into promoting more reactionary content, and that they are responsible over the last 15 years for generally promoting conservatism.

  • Every now and again I am reminded of my sentiment that the introduction of "media" onto the Internet is a net harm. Maybe 256 dithered color photos like you'd see in Encarta 95 and that's the maximum extent of what should be allowed. There's just so much abuse from this kind of shit... despicable.

  • how come he didn't publish a statement before oct7 2023 where he said palestinians should be free from occupation?

  • Dude literally sieg heiled and we all saw it. I'm sure his devoted fans are saddened to see him claim he did otherwise.

  • Sidepoint: In Gnome if I'm using Xorg the DE has instant animations but Firefox has normal ones. Only in Gnome Wayland does that effect propagate to the browser itself. Unsure about KDE Xorg.

  • I'm not European and even I despise von der Leyen. She's one of the most cynical people on Earth.

  • The other day I tried to have it help me with a programming task on a personal project. I am an experienced programmer, but I only "get by" in Python (typically just by looking up the documentation for the standard library). I thought, "OK. This is it. I will ask Llama 3.3 and GPT4 for help."

That shit literally set me back a weekend. It gave me such bad approaches and answers, that I could tell were bad (aforementioned experience in programming, degree in comp sci, etc) that I got confused about writing Python. Had I just done what I usually do, which is to look up the documentation and use my brain, I would have gotten my weekend task done a whole weekend sooner.

It scares me to think what people are doing to themselves by relying on this, especially if they're novices.

  • Regarding the "Unmasking" what is already there point, this is addressed nicely by someone else. Does Lemmy let you forward/repost comments from other instances? Taken from @Azarova@hexbear.net

Aerosols from China’s industrialization were blocking sunlight. When they reduced aerosol emissions, the blocking effect diminished and caused apparent warming, but this warming was already ‘baked in’, if you will, because the GHG’s keeping the heat in were already present. Something similar on a more localized level happened a few years ago when some international(?) regulation passed that reduced the aerosol emissions of cargo ships. These emissions had kept a large band of North America cooler than it would be naturally and the introduction of the regulations caused a “termination shock” that resulted in warmer weather across the affected area. This is also the premise to a number of geo-engineering proposals, with the idea being that you could seed the upper atmosphere with aerosols that would hang up there for a considerable length of time but would spread across the planet, reducing the amount of sunlight that reaches the surface. This would certainly cool down the earth, but you also have the problem like with the shipping example, except on a planetary scale. As soon as you stop reapplying the aerosols, the planet will jump from its “engineered” temperature to its “actual” temperature extremely quickly.

  • until it's zero that's still too many. everyone who buys one of these things should be made to regret doing so

edit: thinking on it the way I worded that makes it sound much more sinister than I meant. But those who use these things as investment vehicles (ha) should not be allowed to reap a return. Those who buy in should be embarrassed. Everyone who is considering buying should now be thinking, "Am I willing to subject myself to public humiliation for a car that will be worthless soon and might even possibly be vandalized if I left it out in a public parking space?"
