i feel like discord is much better at fostering a community and less good at being a resource or repository of information. like in a discord you talk directly to individuals so you get to know them and become friends. if you are new you can just pop in and say hi and start making friends, it's very organic. other platforms are much worse at this. I feel this is a big reason people use it.
Honestly Mastodon is pretty nice compared to Reddit or Lemmy. It's like mostly a bunch of gay and trans ppl posting pics of their cats or gardens and saying they are "eepy" all the time then writing out long technical posts about the Linux kernel or group theory or something.
I'm pretty sure the tone of this place would go up a few ticks if every other post had a blob fox emoji.
I personally do not care about illegal crossings, it does not affect me in the slightest. Immigration is a net positive for the country imo, and I really don't care about if it happens the "right way" or not. Fuck borders shit is a scam.
I feel the obvious thing that is happening is they are trying to normalize it in a lead up to civil war. One inch at a time they are consciously walking towards normalizing state on state interference. It's same reason we are seeing texas trying to get medical records from a Seattle hospital. Pushing the boundaries is the MO.
Why would that be required for understanding? Presumably during the training it would have made connections between words it saw. Now that the training has stopped it hasn't just lost those connections, sure it can't make new connections but why is that important for using the connections it already has?
They claim its racist to have policies that try to promote diversity. They claim its giving preferential treatment to minorities which is not color blind and thus racist in their view.
(to be clear i think this line of thinking is dumb a duck but it's what I see when people try to argue it)
younger millennial. never got my licence, or really wanted it.
people are shocked when i tell them i don't drive. it was annoying growing up cus people kept trying to push it on me but eventually most people gave up. older people get weirdly offended if you don't drive, i truly don't understand it. honestly just find cars massively unappealing, nausea inducing, and gross for everyone and everything involved. like a loud moving pollution boxes that can kill. roads are pretty gross too, covered in oil and garbage. i was recently diagnosed autistic, i think it partially explains my distaste for them with sensory issues, at least the nausea part.
and in modern world it's not even really an inconvenience. if I need to get somewhere there is uber, if there was better public transport options where i live i would take them instead, trains and rail tend to cause me much less nausea. but i still have to use uber a lot even tho they make me car sick. pretty sure its way cheaper than actually owning a car, at least with how often i use it. get groceries delivered ect..
i would be pretty happy if the car industry collapsed ngl

There is a good Adam Conover podcast episode where he interviews Corey Robin. In the episode Robin states the main premise of his book, which is that the central underlying ideology of the right is the belief that some people are better than others and deserve to be in power. A lot of the rights' beliefs and ideas evolve over time but they evolve in service of that core idea. It's the one thing that stays consistent over time going back to the french revolutions.
Multiracial, multiethnic, international cooperation, helping the homeless, helping the poor. No matter how you spin it by trying to convince them of the benefits ect, the right will never be on board. They don't believe those groups deserve help or should be helped. They fundamentally believe it is morally good to depower certain groups and empower other groups.
That one idea explains so much of the rights blatant hypocrisy. Welfare disproportionality going to red states is good because it's going to the good people. Rich people getting richer is good because it's going to the good people. Hurting minorities is good because they are the bad people, helping them is bad. Some people are innately worthy and some people are not. Anything the good people do is good, anything the bad people do is bad. The same action can be good or bad depending on who is doing it.
I think the saner option would be communal food preparation, but like with real human food and not the capitalist slop that is fast food. A lot of people don't want to, or don't have the energy for cooking. It's pretty time consuming and energy intensive, even when you have the time for it. For most of human history communal food prep was the norm.
When I was at school at a fairly large university I ate at the cafeterias and literally I never ate better and more healthy in my life than when I was there. The food was just normal food, and it was always available and high quality. I feel like cafeterias like it should be possible all over the place, sure it was a well funded school but I don't really see why they shouldn't be possible. I dream of returning to school often for that reason, as well as the walkable layout and close knit community.
