  • I just like to think that we're currently playing the Weimar Germany game. Let Trump win and you'll have given the Republicans decades of power if not more. They've been planning for years to control the government through the supreme court, you think this is the worst they can do?

For those wanting acceleration towards collapse, that's not guaranteed, and will cause many deaths in the process if it does, and there probably still won't be any guarantee or high likelihood of some sorta takeover by the proletariat or what have you. Seeing as how most of the militant groups in the US are likely to be right wing, all you'll have is a right wing take over after a collapse.

  • Even if that were the case, couldn't the Chinese government just covertly get one of their companies to buy any such data from companies like Meta and Google anyways, and then request it from one of their own firms if they wanted to? Tiktok just makes it so that the Chinese government can (if they were harvesting American data) acquire it for free.

  • The article says something about this tech being used to find any leaks that happen so that they can be patched and or used for methane collection. The collected methane can then be sold. Google would probably make money from selling this service to these fossil fuels companies.

  • Tbh, I've always thought about it like this, making deepfake tech illegal would be like making photoshopping faces on porn images illegal. At the end of the day the technology itself shouldn't be regulated, the end products themselves should be though. If you Photoshop some kids face onto some nude body, you should be arrested for possession regardless if it was "real" or not. The same should go for deepfake porn exploiting children.

However I see very little wrong with some guy photoshopping adult celeb or "friends" faces onto nude model bodies, same for those who do it with deepfake tech, just don't distribute it.

  • I'd recommend not using it too often for sleep. Weed tends to disrupt REM sleep. Rem is extremely beneficial as it plays a role in memory consolidation, emotional processing, brain development, and dreaming.

  • I think given Lemmy's user group, we should start a movement to download and archive as much LGBTQ+ content as possible and stowaway the drives so that if the fascists take power, they won't be very effective at actually getting rid of such knowledge.

  • I think what they don't realize is that it's basically Pandora's box at this point, and what's been let out is a ticking time bomb. Unless something changes, remote work will always be on the cards now and will probably always be preferable.

  • You are treating a written product the same as a commodity. The success of a creative work isn't assured and fixed like a commodity is, basically working like fiat. So a piece of writing can either make very little money or a bunch. The initial cost of creating a show would be so much higher if writers were paid based on what the script is "worth", since there is no real metric for show success and writers would probably just charge up the wazoo to be able to survive long enough till their next gig. This would probably also decrease creative quality, and you'd probably have shittier shows because of this.
