This talk of V10's started before the Ferrari deal. It started after the goal posts moved after Andretti Cadillac came together, and Cadillac needed to be a full engine supplier, before Andretti were accepted as the eleventh team.
It was there to try and scare off Cadillac, who already would of had to spend a lot of time and money for a V6. For it only to be used for a couple years before the V10 switch.
