  • I read a fantastic book not maybe five years ago it so titled the creative destruction of medicine which touches quite well on how a lot of medicine has to fundamentally change and it's happening through a lot of destruction. If you find the field of medicine interesting or want to know what the next few decades likely have in store, I'd recommend the book.

  • In the same way that I'm not in charge of the decisions when it comes to the tech side of things, I don't want someone who knows nothing about a subject making decisions about that subject. I personally think it's better to have someone trusted in charge and have strong transparency

  • Every image from every server you federate with gets locally cached. You can't turn it off and there's no tools for the image DB. You don't use the cache when people click links to images on other instances either, it retrieves it from the instance it's hosted on. It's a rather serious issue

  • It doesn’t say that.

Yes I very clearly stated what my *guess *was. Nothing says enough to determine what truly happened here. As someone who works in the medical field, I'm making an educated guess based on my knowledge of how medical devices, elective surgeries, and governing bodies work.

  • You asked how it might work, you didn't say it had to be practical lmao

  • You require them legally to budget and plan these things and give them harsh penalties if they fail. That they need to set aside money in a way that it can't be touched if they go under. You'll likely need to hire teams at the government to help fill gaps and coordinate.

  • The wonderful thing about human drivers is that they generally listen to instructions from first responders and are pretty good at realizing when they need to get out of the way. Even when they do not speak English, they are typically responsive to gestures.

Entirely unsurprisingly, existing resources are putting together plans on how to deal with this problem and what they'd like to see in terms of changes from AV operators and the companies which operate them.

  • I mean, we should protect against that too by requiring a certain level of service. But at the very least they need to own the device and have the right to leave the device in, even if it would fail or potentially cause them harm. I pointed that out because it sounds like they wanted to leave it in and not listen to the doctors advice to remove it, but could not for some reason. The only reason I can imagine would involve someone paying for the surgery to remove it against her will is one in which she does not own the device and the alternative is being burdened with a massive debt to pay off the device.

  • There's a distinct difference between complaining that you were labeled a certain way and being a celebrity and writing a rant apropos of nothing on Twitter about how an amorphous "they" are not calling us women anymore.

You're right that no one should be referred to in a way they don't want to be, but that only applies when they're not being intolerant. Punch Nazis and call them assholes and Nazis. It's good and cool.

  • It's not always about playing their game or saying what will appeal to them. We are especially a safe space for minorities, including trans people, and it's not particularly welcoming when you defend people called out for transphobia. If you want to discuss the merits of having discussions with people who need to learn that's an entirely different conversation.

It probably isn't your intent, but it really seems like you're repeatedly trying to drive home the point that trans people are unreasonable and it's not particularly appreciated by myself or others on this instance. I'm going to have to ask you to stop this line of reasoning and avoid discussing it on this instance in the future.

  • You accusing me of being in defense of transphobia

You entered this thread to say "it's not transphobia" and that it was just "shifting language". This was in response to someone who said it was transphobia. Furthermore when called out on this, you then said you're not aware of what they said. How am I supposed to interpret this as anything but a defense?

Telling them to shut up doesn’t get them on your side.

I apologize if it ever came off that way, but my intent was not to tell you to be quiet. My intent was to ask you questions about your stance.

  • Frankly the articles I've found all use a mix of really weird language. In some places it says she was 'advised' to remove it by doctors, which makes a lot of sense. In others they talk about finances and purchasing the implant from the company.

My guess is that it was a combination of factors and while she ultimately did not want to give up the device despite being urged by doctors (she accepted the risk of leaving it in), but she was robbed of the possibility by capitalism and the fact that the company was forced to liquidate assets as terms of going bankrupt or being bought by another company. But we might have to wait for a court case or proper reporting to find out.

I hope we are able to enshrine some rights over forced explantation in the future. As soon as a device is implanted in you, you should own it 100%, no matter the cost of the device. To encourage making this possible even for extremely expensive devices, we should probably offer huge write offs or some other incentive to these companies lest they decide to restrict their purchase to only rich clients.

  • I won’t defend all of these people because I’m not aware of everything they’ve said.

Your comment seemed rather like a defense, yet now you're saying you're not aware of what they've said? Why did you come in here trying to defend them?

I see that you're trying to make a point about language, but it really doesn't help for you to be defending these people while you make it.

at the same time if they want to be more widely accepted they need more clear messaging and they need to accept that people don’t understand even the most basic principles of what makes someone trans.

This sounds dangerously close to tone policing

You can’t just shut people out and shout them down when they don’t know what you’re talking about because then they will discard your entire position wholesale.

I mean, maybe they aren't trying to reach the people they're shouting at? It's kind of hard to be civil to the very people who are quite literally threatening your life. I also think it's kind of fucked up to be telling trans people that they need to convince others of their humanity? Why are we putting such a burden on the people who are being marginalized by society?

  • This is an extremely weird comment to make. Are you implying that sexual abuse being wrong needs to be taught explicitly ?

  • Help me to understand how this is not a disingenuous comment. I only skimmed the article but I completely fail to see where a 'sudden language shift' comes into play. There are quite literally slurs in this article.

  • I think we utilized snapshots to downsize so there were less backups this month

  • just pull yourself up by your bootstraps, obviously

  • I told you that you need to change your behavior and all you've done is attempt to argue with me rather than understand why your behavior was not acceptable. You're getting a 7 day ban so you can have time to think this over.

  • Fantastic, I'm great you have that going for you. I'm letting you know that making value judgements on other poor people for being poor is not okay. Don't do that on Beehaw.
