  • Law is entirely man made and purely a concept to allow for formal processes that we agree on as necessary to maintaining an ethical society. I see no reason why we can't recognize natural entities as having legal rights. In fact, it's a pretty good idea, markedly better than deciding that corporations are people.

  • I'm completely on board with this kind of thing, but a much more effective measure is to levy fines which can get extreme. HIPAA is a great example of how powerful of a force fines can be. If you get stripped of your right to do business you can always start a new business or move to another state. But if you have to pay a fine, there's no easy way out - you can fight it in court but at the end of the day you're likely paying the fine. This would allow the state to actually recoup on the damage that wage theft reaps on the populace of the state.

  • Our only rule here is to be nice. We expect people to treat others with a modicum of good faith. I'm only stepping in here because your comment was reported, assuming I'm here because I have the 'arrogance to tell you that you need to change who you are' is not good faith, and the reality is that this is a shared space and if you're not able to follow the rules you do either need to change or we'll show you the door.

I'm going to give you a temporary ban for a week to give you some space to cool off. If you're not able to treat others nicely around here, it's just simply not going to be a good fit for you.

  • It's pretty clear to me that you have a strong emotional reason to be replying to everyone who's talking about science in this thread with at least a healthy bit of skepticism. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, and I wholeheartedly agree that we should be skeptical about claims which outweigh evidence available in science. I also think that it's good and cool to talk about all the things that we can't explain with science and to revel in and appreciate their beauty.

But at the same time, you're hyper engaged here with people and pushing a really strong narrative in a way that at times feels dismissive and uses some strong language (blinded you, funny title, arrogance, self-satisfied, etc) to paint pictures that aren't necessarily reflective of the world as it exists but perhaps more reflective of the world as you've experienced it. It's not exactly good faith to treat others this way and some folks have already reported your comments as being a bit aggressive and in general not nice.

It might be a good idea for you to either disengage with this thread, or work on softening your language and asking more questions rather than making strong statements about others.

  • I can't even imagine how fucked up of a mental state that would leave her in. She's going to regret this and hold herself responsible for this for the rest of her life. It's tragic

  • We love to see more good natured content, but unfortunately asking for more doesn't tend to change the behaviors of others. If you have ideas, or want to contribute content in this way, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • In the future please don't be dismissive. We have many non-native English speakers on the internet. Providing them feedback that they are saying something incorrectly so that they can correct themselves in the future is feedback that can be helpful, but doing so in a polite way is much nicer than a condescending one 💜

  • I personally think arresting the kid was a step too far (this is the kind of policing that is rather unwarranted), but it is a rather bizarre choice of behavior

  • Let me be clear: The ONLY site I have ever been banned from was reddit for posting ‘Punching nazis is a moral good’, and please tell me now if this is a violation here and I will just delete my account and leave.

Punching nazis is most definitely a moral good. We've outlined this (intolerance towards the intolerant) in our docs.

  • One thing though: Criticism of admins should never be considered a rule breaking event provided it is not derogative or endangering, and if my reply to you is considered a reason for admin action then I need to reconsider my participation in beehaw as well.

Wanting to block an admin isn't criticism. You're free to criticize us, and in fact, encouraged to do so if we are warranting criticism. If you were able to block us, we wouldn't be able to tell you when you are breaking the rules or provide feedback based on reports of your comments. We can't run a space like this without giving this kind of feedback to members, and just like what happened in this case, we try to give this feedback before jumping to moderator actions like banning.

  • I think the most interesting finding in this study is the following:

The models also suffered from “contra-factual bias": They were likely to believe a false premise embedded in a user’s question, acting in a “sycophantic” way to reinforce the user’s mistake.

Which when you think about how language models work, makes a lot of sense. It's drawing upon trained data sets that match the question being asked. It's easy to lead it to respond a certain way, because people who talk pro/con certain issues will often use specific kinds of language (such as dog whistles in political issues).

  • I am back home from groove cruise and had my first full night of sleep in over a week. It was honestly one of the best experiences in my life. I have a lot of thoughts on how to improve my next go at it (sleeping arrangements are top of this list), but like my first EDC it's extremely clear to me that I want to do this most likely every year for as long as they are still doing this.

With all that being said, my shoulder is wrecked (and I need to spend a few hours on the line with insurance and billing to clear a multi month issue with coverage on getting the damn implant placed again), I still don't quite have my land legs back, I've been feeling like I'm maybe getting sick for the last two days, I'm nauseous looking at my phone and typing this up right now, and my body is exhausted (averaged 60k steps and about 2.5k activity calories per day on the cruise). But amidst all that I have to say that my mood is excellent, I'm feeling a huge amount of gratitude to have had that experience and I'm feeling very loved and positive about the communities and people I've chosen in my life.

  • Political history, especially in the house of representatives, paints a vivid picture of long term Republican thinking. Their ability to canvas and take over local government as well as mobilize their voting based is absolutely unrivaled by any other political party in the US. Think tanks from the right have been publishing political playbooks for decades which outline their thinking and planning on both short and long term issues and this shouldn't be dismissed as not thinking ahead.

  • Grand and spectacular but also at times very intimate. All in all a wonderful and loving environment with very good vibes.

  • Just got back. It was Weds thru Sunday

  • I'm not here to tone police your doomerism, but have you considered how the words "he's better off" might upset anyone who's lost family due to violence?

Please do your best to be considerate of the feelings of others on beehaw, it's the nice thing to do 💜

  • Yeah I don't expect to sleep much at all even with sleeping meds lol, but it will be fun!

  • About to board a plane so I can arrive at a boat for the first cruise I've ever been on. It's called groove cruise and it's 24/7 DJs and music/dancing. Hard to separate anxiety from excitement. It'll be fun but I probably won't sleep much!
