  • Nah I don't run anything related to graphics. Mainly clang compiler. Speaking of native speeds I mentioned, sysbench gives me pretty much the same results in WSL and in native Linux, with a margin of error here and there.

  • Nowadays I'd say driver discovery for virtually any modern hardware you might plug into your computer. You don't even need to visit websites to download installers anymore. Literally plug it in and it will grab whatever is needed for it to work properly. Yes even Nvidia display driver. Even VR headset.

    Never had any issues with multi-monitor setups out of the box either. It just works.

    I'd also mention disposable Sandbox and virtualization in general. WSL also runs at native speeds.

  • Laptops. Cheap and midrange ones defined how people perceive laptops in general: slow, hot and awful to use. Expensive ones are usually amazing, but you still have to do your research before purchasing it.

    Also, cigars. Nothing comes close to proper Cuban ones.

  • Most people here recommend stopping something not taking into account that it may not last long. One slip and you're back. No addiction is cured by stopping immediately. You cannot simply get rid of a habit in one day. It has to be steady and progressive so that there's zero stress during transition.

    First, start combining junk food with healthier meals. Like once a week, have something semi-healthy. Find something that tastes right for you. It may be not completely healthy, but the main thing is that you should enjoy it. Then start expanding it to more days per week. Repeat until the week days are all "semi-healthy" food. Next step, do the same but lean towards even healthier food, repeat the same process. Start marking cheat days on your calendar, when you can eat whatever you want. At this point you want to make eating healthy food a habit, and cheat days (1-3 per month) as an exception.

    I used to drink lots of Lipton Ice Tea. First I switched to some other drink but with less sugar. Then I switched to Cola Zero. Then I started drinking mineral water. Now I basically drink just water and occasionally some Coke Zero. Same scenario also worked for smoking.

    TLDR: steadily find better alternatives. Never make sudden change. Make it a habit. Rinse and repeat.

  • I don't really miss 3.5mm, neither do I miss SD card slots. I don't even miss replaceable batteries and all that stuff. But I do sincerely miss good devices with physical keyboards. Damn I wish Blackberry came back for a good flagship.

  • Pretty sure both of them have something to benefit from in this scenario. Knowing how often they partner up, might be true. Most likely Samsung will just give up the feature name and favor Google's option as a transparent replacement. Google gets the feature name, Samsung gets to brag it is now compatible with all other Android devices. Ez.

  • I'd personally at least give them a chance. Defederating is a pretty easy process and can be performed at any point in time. At least some Threads users may as well get to know about Lemmy and switch to it.

    Upd: yes I do understand many people don't trust Meta and neither do I. But I also understand lots and lots of users here are using anonymous accounts, and federation information is already public to begin with. Combining the fact that Fediverse may gain more than it may lose, including more users, original content, recognition and etc, I generally think it's worth the risk. I am generally content with any decision, just sharing my two pennies of thought.

  • I don't have a "family" in a common sense of understanding like parents, wife, kids and stuff, but I have a girlfriend of 7 years living together and that's pretty much it. Gonna be rather simple as we don't generally bind giving presents to certain dates, and we usually discuss specifics prior so nobody gets something one doesn't need or want.

    I offered her a catalogue of some interesting jewelry and cool watch but she is kinda reluctant, "doesn't look too practical" to her. So we just agreed that she's gonna look into some new mobile phone in January whenever something interesting is out, and if she likes it (she likes doing random photography so a good phone camera is a good idea), I'm gonna buy it for her. That's why I love her - straight to the point and considers usefulness in daily routines.
