  • While I agree that Trek is all about finding common ground, I just hope they don’t humanize the Gorn too much. While I’m no Trekologist I don’t think the Gorn become “friendly” until much later in the time line (like late TNG era). Someone nerdier than me please correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m a little alone on this from what I can see from various forums, but I like the hideous and alien format of this iteration of the Gorn. I hope they continue to at least Cold War this relationship for another season or five.

  • Far too reasonable for this thread. You have to pick a side. You either have to believe that parents and children bare no responsibility for their intrusions on strangers lives or you have to believe that all babies should be exiled from public spaces until they are old enough to behave.

    Choose.

Edit: /s cause this thread is ridiculous enough to need it.

  • Anecdotally, but I (a white dude) have been told that my race would eliminate me for job consideration in the past.

I’m not equating the systemic racism against whites to that suffered by other minorities, but to claim it simply doesn’t exist is wrong. I’ve experienced it.

Edit: I should clarify that I am Canadian, but the culture is similar enough for my point to stand.

  • People are playing by Reddit/echo chamber rules here. Anything that goes even slightly against the grain is jumped on and tried to silence.

FTR: I heard your intent and don’t think you said anything even remotely wrong. This is a human being who needs to be held accountable, but can also at the same time still require our help, even if it’s just simple human empathy.

Edit: but to answer your question… 5 more times should do it. :)

  • While I can’t confirm “worst”, I can safely say that they were the worst I’ve personally experienced.

And everyone I know who has had gallbladder attacks agree that it’s the worst they experienced too. Including women who went through childbirth.

Hell, my first attack I called an ambulance because I thought I was having a heart attack. It sucks, 0/5.

  • For sci-fi specifically, the science should be at least probable. I understand that limits things (eg. FTL), but if you’re just tossing Teknobabble around all willy-nilly then I lose my immersion.

Disclaimer: I don’t mind Telnobabble per se, but it shouldn’t be a crutch.

  • Dick Proenneke - Alone in the Wilderness

This isn’t so much a documentary as it is a video blog, but it’s so worth it.

Recorded back in the late 1960s it is a self documented story of one man moving to remote Alaska and building a cabin/homestead in that untamed wilderness.

I cannot recommend this enough. It’s thoughtful, peaceful, and heartwarming.

  • I did not expect to get into an internet fight over turtle noses today, but here we are. :)

There was another site I saw in my search that claimed they do have sensors under their chin.

I am not an expert, but a quick google search will verify the claims made in the OP.

And I’m done with turtle noses for the day.

  • You did that wrong I think. I only see a search for “do”. Just fyi.

Also when I ask google “do turtles have noses” the first result is that they do. Link from Seaworld.

I’m just saying, if you’re going to claim bullshit on something have some decency to back up the claim.

A sea turtle opens its mouth slightly and draws in water through the nose. It then immediately empties the water out again through the mouth. Pulsating movements of the throat are thought to be associated with smelling

  • Similar yes. Different, also yes.

We simply don’t have the same ingrained prejudices that America has. Ours are different and I would argue less so. After all we don’t have politicians that would openly state that slavery benefitted black people.

  • Examples?

I, and many others, think this is great Trek. I’m just curious if you can articulate what you find un-Trek about this show.

FTR: All other Trek we’ve had so far has been essentially from the perspective of the elite of the Trek universe. Now we’re just seeing the universe from the “worker class”. It’s just a different perspective, but still holds to the ideals of Roddenberry Trek I feel.
