  • Interesting. I knew about the horses being non-native. But the Apache part not.

Is there something that made them more likely to benefit from being a horse-culture?

    Living on Steppes and Plains?

  • This is why net fishing is so problematic (apart from obvious environmental conserns and bycatch).

Stun your fish people. Don’t let their blood clot and lungs collapse while still conscious for multiple minutes. It’s cruel.

  • Since you mention you have no real opinions about lemm.ee. You were just on there by chance.

I’ll propose you the style of blahaj which is to have downvotes disabled, its quite a different way to interact with lemmy, maybe a bit weird to get used to. But it feels much less hostile. And it fosters a good culture of just ignoring shitty takes and replies.

As far as “no extremes” you mentioned you prefer, blahaj blocks lemmygrad and hexbear (ultra authoritarians) and any far right instance (think hilariouschaos)

  • Yeah. Our vibe here is kinda dark, and I feel that way as an adult who’se gone through lots of shit. It’s not the most cheery place. Trying to change that a little by little, cuz I love a lot of people here and it’s so unique!

  • A lot of people buy flour, rice, and oats (the cheap and hard to grow yourself grains) and grow the fancy stuff (nice fruits and veg, maybe inoculated mushroom logs) and maybe have some meat roaming in tractors like chickens, themselves. For that use case 0.5-1 acre can cover a person’s food needs easy if doing a smart permaculture type style. (Obviously monocultures take way more space per calorie).

I would recommend looking into aquaponics as well if space is a constraint.

But both take years to set up, and a good amount of labour. It isn’t just like having your vegetable garden you water on weekends.

Also, if in an arid region, the acerage requirements go up.

  • For some chronic illnesses. Yeah. But imagine that for life. And that’s the best you feel. It can get worse. Sometimes for long periods, you don’t know if you will get back even to the that “shitty best you feel”. And even at your best, you barely feel a fraction as good as a healthy person.

You don’t get to feel okay your birthday, or on christmas, or when you need to do something special. You just feel ill, like a bad hangover or bad flu, in perpetuity.

That’s the reality for a lot of severe chronic illnesses.
