  • You're more than welcome to use !autoracing@crazypeople.online but there aren't many subscribers there yet. It's been my catch all for the random series I come across but it's meant to be for all kinds of racing. Something more specific or established might be better if you're looking for more immediate engagement though.

  • Thanks for all you and the team do for Lemmy. We've updated and everything looks good.

  • That's fine, but removing downvoting doesn't prevent the discussion. It curbs drive-by negativity which is a good thing IMO.

Obviously everyone is free to disagree with things. It should be more than absentmindedly hitting a down arrow though. Others obviously feel differently. Thankfully both exist on Lemmy.

  • That would be a useful feature. Maybe something to roll out alongside private communities and things coming in the future.

  • How would this proposed automated system even work? Would it have to know the track layout? Or would it have to close once the driver crosses a certain threshold on steering input?

That's a good question. With any automated system you're eliminating an area of competitiveness. Some drivers are going to push harder and close the flap that fraction later when it's up to the drivers to do it themselves. Making it automated means everyone is going to have the DRS close at the same moment in the corner, which sounds boring and silly. Eliminating the DRS zone entirely would be a better solution if they were to do anything IMO.

  • Being able to disable downvoting is one of the best features Lemmy has and I wish more instances would do it.

Voting here doesn't influence your feed and downvoting largely serves to spread negativity. Turning it off has a negligible impact on usability and an undeniable advantage when people decide their feelings matter more than someone else's, like whatever this is.

We've de-federated from both the instances being used for manipulative voting.

  • Right, that's why I was thinking some kind of workout or something might give them an indication something is wrong before race time. I know other sports have concussion protocols when a head injury occurs and more thorough investigation is needed where they use a mix of historical markers and current performance as part of the evaluation. Maybe F1 needs something like that for the overall physical fitness of the drivers, especially after a big crash. I'll never forget watching Grosjean's crash and seeing Jack unable to get out of the car like that just gives me chills.

  • There are a few different ways to address the spam but none of them are perfect and all of them require intervention from your instance admin. The best course of action is to bring the spam to their attention by reporting the DMs. You may even want to contact your admin directly to ask them to take action.

  • Makes me wonder if he was fit to race after that shunt in practice. I love Jack and wish him nothing but success in F1 but at the same time driver safety should come first. No amount of pressure is worth risking not being able to make it out in a fire, etc.

Does anyone happen to know if drivers are re-tested/timed on exiting the car after big crashes? If not that seems like something that should be looked at.

  • Awesome mate. Glad you found something you feel comfortable helping with!

  • That's why I suggested asking others to adopt some of the slower communities that are already out there. ๐Ÿ˜‰

There's bound to be others who are interested, you've already gotten a few bites with this post.

  • Anything that isn't in the current mainstream tends to be in short supply on Lemmy. People haven't gotten used to the idea that other people aren't already running those communities for them. I think they're still working up the bravery to be more active/figuring out the platform and if it's worth the effort.

As others suggested you could start some communities up yourself. Maybe another option is digging up some of the dead communities and making a post asking others if they're interested in taking them over? That's worked for a couple communities in the past.
