  • You’ve probably set your feed to show active posts rather than new or something else. This has been getting some comments as far as I can see, so that might have pushed it higher in your feed.

  • Rune factory 3. It’s not popular anymore, nor do I see it talked about but I still play it from time to time. Sometimes I leave it open just to listen to the music/background and sometimes I fire up youtube and my speaker just to listen to its OST.

  • I was a bit surprised myself. I’m a lurker on reddit but addicted to lemmy. Can’t explain it. But I’m glad I’m here to witness this. :)

  • As he sat on his golden throne, his empire growing and diminishing in its own weight, new gods and empires rise and fall, his very legacy cast to the forces of chaos as the sons and daughters of his mighty but rotting Imperium fought amongst themselves. And as he watched satisfied from his divine city, the hungering investors, devourer of worlds and empires, crept ever closer, waiting for the most opportune moment to strike, to feed its never ending hunger for profit.

  • If you have friends from other social media, you can always invite them over, if you have a forum account or facebook, you can also link lemmy.world in the website or signature. :) or just work on posting interesting things to communities here in the hopes that it will get the ball rolling.

  • Sorry if I have to go on a tangent here but reading your posts reminds me of the Imperium of Man from warhammer. Reddit has grown so big that it probably won’t matter if entire subreddits disappear, as some would replace it eventually.

Though how long they can sustain this remains to be seem.

  • I looked around and we have a nosleep here as well though. Admittedly there’s not much in it yet. It would be nice if more people will post here, but it’s only been week 1 of the great migration. I’m staying positive that overtime, communities will move or not, crosspost here. :)

  • Image now replaced with a cropped one. I didn’t want complaints of an edited/altered screenshot so I didn’t alter it at first.

  • If that’s the strategy, is the loss of trust really worth it? How would they entice users back when all the 3rd party apps has shut down?

  • That’s an interesting take. If reddit can claim victory, it would be a hollow one, even if the remaining mods do cave.

  • To be honest, proton is quite expensive for what it gives. Though this might differ depending on income levels and level of comfort. But their free version is serviceable enough if your email volume isn’t that high.

  • Yeah I guess. But yahoo, tutanota, proton mail, hotmail, etc. all answer to a company. I was hoping for a more permanent solution which I think could either be

    1. Fediverse not requiring email to sign up

    Or

    1. A community or non profit email service that is not tied to one company but owned by many.

I guess proton mail will be the next best thing but there’s the fear that they too will not remain free forever.

  • This is what I am afraid of. Because all major providers are companies in the end and they need to make a profit. So there may be a time when we really have to host our own email (not all of us can easily do)

I don’t know, maybe, I am just disillusioned in general that I am starting to look for community alternatives rather than provided by big companies. At least right now we have plan B like proton mail and the rest. But if the trend continues, the pessimist in me fears the time where everyone would have to self host email, or subscribe to a big provider and submit to their rules.

I shudder to think about the idea of emails becoming subscription services though.

  • I actually didn’t know that. So in the off chance that gmail fails or if it becomes too unbearable to use, the solution is to buy a domain and host your own email?

  • I guess you’re right. Even some lemmy instances had to close registration. Ahhh so kbin is newer. I guess that explains a lot too.

Also took a quick look at tildes and it’s text only, as far as I know. So if they change their mind about registrations, not a lot of people will join anyway.

  • Sorry didn’t include a link since it’s on the app store. Thanks for providing one.

  • I personally want to consolidate all content in the fediverse because I see it as more archival-proof. Companies can come and go, brands can sell and change, but a community effort like the fediverse has a huge potential to last.

Just look at reddit and how many useful guides have been taken down.

If you know where to look, there are a lot of useful news, posts, guides, articles and media floating around but often, these are at the hands of big corporations and companies who can turn their backs on their users any time (and with it, our access to these files/media/etc)

  • You have a point. But the question becomes, why isn’t the fediverse doing the same? To the best of my knowledge, lemmy and mastodon relies on user initiatives with no organized effort to grab as many users as possible (not to discredit the extreme overtime that admins of lemmy.world are doing).

Other instances are doing the opposite, closing registrations left and right or making it harder by requiring multiple essays and job-like interviews as barriers for entry.

Sorry if I sound a little bit frustrated but i sincerely believe that this is a perfect opportunity to cast fediverse and open source into the mainstream and genuinely compete with corporate and commercialized platforms.

  • This is the level of transparency that most companies should strive for. Ironic that in terms of fixing things, volunteer and passion projects seem to be more on top of issues compared to big companies with hundreds of employees.
