Exactly. Everyone complains that UN doesn't act as world police, but we collectively created it so that it couldn't be world police.

Heck, part of it is you have to convince people to stop treating others as a monolith. Even the language of "their enemy will stop punching them" implies the entire populace of Israel is one monolith united in oppressing the Palestinians and that the entire population of Palestine is one monolith united in actively fighting Israel.

People need to be able to take a step back and recognize that their enemies are not the common folk, the innocent civilians. Most people just want to live their lives. Only a small minority is ever actually actively engaged in the fighting, or the political decisions to continue fighting.

Israelis (at least those that support Netanyahu and the apartheid state) need to collectively realize that having an apartheid state is not "fighting back"; it's just punishing 99% innocents. Likewise, Hamas needs to realize that mass murdering civilians is not "fighting back"; it's just punishing 99% innocents. True fighting back requires actually finding the people responsible for harming you, not ascribing blame to rando civilians just because they happen to have been born on the same side of the border as your true enemies.

It's not a choice between "murder innocent civilians" and "do nothing"; it's a choice between "murder innocent civilians" and "target legitimate targets such as the military apparatus that actually murders Palestinians regularly or the right-wing political apparatus that pursues a policy of military hyper-aggressiom, apartheid, and settler colonialism".

If they chose to do the latter, I doubt nearly as many people would take issue with them, they'd receive vastly more sympathy, and they could finally end the systemic murder and oppression of Palestinians faster.

I think an apt comparison is Russia and Ukraine right now. I fully support Ukraine in this war, and part of that is not just because they're the underdog who got unjustifiably invaded, but because they take care to avoid targetting innocent civilians. For example, when they strike Sevastopol, they strike military facilities, never residential areas. Whereas Russia intentionally terrorizes the Ukrainian people, kidnaps Ukrainian children, targets residential areas, and commits so frickin many war crimes.

If the attack by Hamas were against legitimate military targets, I don't think there would be many people out here questioning it. But they didn't. They are a fundamentalist religious group that wishes to commit genocide, and they intentionally targeted and mass-murdered civilians. Beyond that, by attacking a music festival, they targeted people who were statistically more likely to be sympathetic to their cause. Clearly their goal is not simply self defense, but genocide.

Also a good comparison is the PLO in West Bank, as they aren't Hamas and had no hand in this attack. In fact, they and Hamas hate each other. And as far as I'm aware, PLO just wants the two-state solution and haven't officially sanctioned terrorist attacks in ages. Unfortunately, Hamas has likely managed to discredit the PLO cause, despite them not having any guilt in this.

I don't follow their politics closely, but I still can't believe Netanyahu clawed his way back into power after basically everyone else in government, even fellow hard right-wingers, banded up to oust him. That, plus him having faced all those corruption charges. Wtf is up with politics in Israel that allowed him to claw his way back in so quickly like some sort of alien parasite?

Last year, my sister had her driver's license suspended because of a medical condition, but she's still perfectly capable of riding a bike. But the problem is our societal assumption of cars-for-all-whether-you-like-it-or-not means her neighborhood street design is extremely hostile to her getting around by bike safely, and it's way too sprawling and car-dependent to walk anywhere. There's also no public transit within a reasonable walking distance.

So I might ask you: Do you believe people like my sister deserve the same right to mobility as the rest of us? If so, why support a system that make life actively hostile to her and people like her? You act as if disabilities are a monolith, and that cars are only ever their saviors, as if cars are never the thing making life actively more difficult for many people.

Exactly. I'd honestly rather have paid social media than engagement algo and ad-driven social media. When your algorithms chase engagement over all else, it leads to real harms, like the youtube alt-right pipeline. Fediverse ain't perfect, but I like that there's no engagement-chasing algorithm, no ads, just donations.

Granted, there is a difference between a temp agency or a third-party recruiter and a "coaching" type service. The former are strictly about finding applicants, and they get paid for that service by the prospective employers. The latter are about 1-on-1 coaching, CV editing, etc., and hence they're paid for by the prospective employee.

That said, I've never used one of them nor do I really see the point, given the wealth of information available for free out there. Then again, I did benefit from speaking to career advisors at my university, which were free to me at the point of service but obviously still paid for by me via my tuition.

I am struggling to find any online testimonials from third parties. I have seen other similar deals with other legit companies, but how they usually work is you sign a contract with them to give them a certain percentage of your salary for the first year or two of any job they help get you hired for. This is important as it gives them an incentive to actually follow through and get you as good a job offer as they can. With an upfront payment like this, they have no material incentive to follow through and actually try to get you a good job. Even if they're not a straight-up scam, it might be sufficient for them to avoid a lawsuit by getting you one or two crappy job offers, then throwing up their hands and saying, "We've done our job; it's on you if you don't wanna accept these jobs."

I wouldn't bother with these guys. If you really want this sort of coaching, go for a reputable one that you would sign a contract giving them a percentage of your salary. And definitely one with plenty of third-party reviews online.

It's one thing that's super frustrating about a lot of online left-wing populism — so much focus on villainizing and punishing individuals and not nearly enough on fixing the systemic issues via good policy. Hate landlords? Talk about eliminating the housing crisis to eliminate their power over you. Hate your boss? Talk about improving safety nets and overall prosperity to reduce their power over you. Hate corporations? Talk about eliminating monopolism, reducing barriers to entry, and increasing competition so they have less power over you. Villainizing and punishing individuals feels good, but it does nothing to eliminate the underlying economic power dynamics.

It's what happens when someone hates capitalism so much and hasn't touched grass in so long that they cheer on the brutal murder of small business owners. Prime example of your brain on extreme black-and-white thinking.

I love them. Not all foods release easily, but they work great for flatbreads, searing meat, stir-frying vegetables, etc. I avoid cooking cheese or anything particularly prone to sticking in them.

Yeah, one thing I hate is seeing pans slowly degrade over time. But with cast iron and carbon steel, they improve with use. Plus, no PFAS!
