  • I don't know why you thought salon would be better. I was literally about to say they're the liberal equivalant of Fox but I just looked it up and even Fox is actually ranked higher on factual reporting than Salon. A closer comparison would be that they're the liberal equivalent of Breitbart.

  • Google has already been caught serving ads that inject malware on multiple occasions. It's literally googles ad service that can't be trusted. If they don't even have the decency to vet the ads that they're serving (which they clearly don't) then I'm definitely blocking the damn things.

  • That's something else that pissed me off. I do understand demonitizing from ad income (although in my opinion advertizers should just cope) for "vulgar" content. But it makes no sense for those same videos to lose youtube premium income. If youtube premium users are watching the video then the poster should be making at least that income even if the video cand be advertized on.

  • I'd be in favor of direct payments too if any of the money actually made it to the content creators I watch. As it it most of their videos wind up demonitized so I'm not going to pay youtube just so youtube can pay copyright trolls. If they started pushing back against the people/companies filing false copyright claims then I would be willing to pay. But we all know that won't happen.

  • Also the notion that sales is the most important department in corporate since they, well, bring in the sales.

The sales people can't sell anything without the people who make the actual equipment. On the other hand things still sell without sales people. One of the largest contracts at my company was a company that reached out to us unprompted.

  • I would love to support the creators I watch through youtube but they all get demonitized for bs reasons. That's the only reason I don't actually buy premium. It's not the cost, it's just that none of the money would actually make it to the people I watch.

  • I've had this thought before too. Like, someone somewhere must be clicking on these ads but I've never met them. The closest I've found is my dad who clicks on the google search ads (before I blocked them for him) but he isn't exactly an active internet user. He might open youtube once a month for one video when hes trying to fix something. Noone is making much ad revenue off of him.

  • Just so people who see them aren't worried, they don't just eat bed bugs. They will eat basically any insect that is smaller than they are up to and including spiders. I even saw one eating a yellowjacket once. So having house centipedes in your home doesn't mean that you have bedbugs.

  • I've struggled with anxiety and depression for almost 20 years now. Sometime durring that there are times where it would get bad, every little thing seemed like the end of the world, and I would need to just ride it out. Durring those times I have a rather morbid but effective saying I would say to myself. It's kind of a bastardization of the army EOD motto which is officially "Initial sucess or total failure". It makes sense because when someone is defusing a bomb and they fail then the bomb goes off and they die. But logic would dictate that if they're not dead then they haven't failed yet. So when my brain is being uncooperative about something I did I just think to myself "That didn't kill me so I didn't fail yet." It's just a way to remind myself that unless a decision I make or thing that happens actually kills me, I still have a chance to fix it.

As far as actual help with money and budgeting I can't be much help because Im in the same boat myself. There was a budgeting app I used a while back called "You Need A Budget" (I think the app is just named YNAB). It works really well for actually seeing exactly where all your money is going. The only problem I had with it is that it just assumes that you will actually make enough money to fully cover all of your expenses and as I'm sure you're aware that isn't always the case when you're broke.

As far as more immediate help I have personally been using a payday loan app called earnin to help buffer some expenses. It's nice because it doesn't directly charge any interest on the money you borrow. Instead it just asks for "tips" and you can just choose to tip $0 if money is really tight. It does guilt you a bit for doing that but it doesn't stop you. I normally tip $6 and it doesn't complain about that. You can borrow up to $100 per day up to your pay period limit which is based on how much you make and will go up based on you reliably making payments and if you tip at all (don't do the default tip, $6 is plenty to make it go up) If you want let me know and I can send you my link (I think we both get $25) but just posting it here makes me feel like a spam bot.

  • Some places do have truely awful tap water even if it is technically drinkable. I've been places where the tap water reeked of sulphur and no filter would take out the taste short of an RO filter. We always had to buy drinking water there. At the same time though we always bought water in gallon jugs rather than the individual bottles.
