  • Most people don't get seed money from their parents, but the median American will inherit $70K from their parents.

Regardless, most people who start a business can take out a loan. And to put things in perspective, even opening a fast food restaurant will require over $200K.

In other words, the advantage that $28K gave Musk was nowhere near enough to open a small restaurant, much less automatically turn him into a billionaire.

  • Peer review is a general principle that goes beyond the formalities of journal publication.

Even if you never submit your work to a peer-reviewed journal, your scientific claims will be judged by a community of scientific peers. If your work is not accepted by your scientific peers, then you are not contributing to scientific knowledge.

For example, most homeopathic claims are never submitted to journals. They are nevertheless judged by the scientific community, and are not persuasive enough to be accepted as scientific knowledge.

  • Science is based on peer review, which means that a scientific opinion will be accepted only if it can convince a sufficient number of other scientists. This is not too different from using an explicit voting system to rank answers.

All scientists accept the possibility that what they currently believe to be true may one day be considered false. Science does not pretend to describe only eternal truths. So it's not a problem if the most popular answer today becomes the least popular answer in the future, or vice versa.

  • Some places have done away with bail on the basis that it targets the poor, like NJ, IL and the UK. But eliminating bail does not mean eliminating all pretrial detention. This couple would be in pretrial detention even in states without ball, because their own actions made them a flight risk.

And appeals are meant to be used when you think the judge made a legal error, not when you simply don't agree with the law. If you can't acknowledge that a correctly applied law may be used against you, then your trial will take longer than most.

  • In 1991, Apple Computer made an agreement to pay Apple Records $26 million in exchange for letting Apple Computer use the "Apple" trademark for music. But that was long before iTunes, they wanted the Apple trademark for their computer chimes. Apple Records agreed to let Apple Computer use the Apple trademark for music as long as it did not "package, sell or distribute physical music materials."

Much later, iTunes was developed and Apple Records sued Apple Computer. Eventually a judge sided with Apple Computer, pointing out that iTunes did not package, sell or distribute physical music materials. Thus, Apple Records couldn't get another bite of that Apple....

  • Yes, it's trademarked for use in video games.

And by another company for use in sporting equipment.

And by another company for fiber optics.

And by another company, as follows...

Telecommunications services, namely, transmission of voice, data, graphics, images, audio, and video via the internet

Yeah, maybe should've stuck with "Twitter"

  • Ford never dominated the US market for gas stations like Tesla does for chargers. Even if Tesla never builds another charger outside the US, it can thrive by dominating the US market alone. And the experience of EA and others demonstrates that it's not so easy to set up a competing network.

Of course Tesla might spin off its charging business, but that won't worry investors. It just means that your Tesla share would turn into a share of TeslaCars plus a share if TeslaChargers.

  • Tesla owns a huge and successful charging network, and most EV makers in the US are switching to Tesla charging ports in order to take advantage of it. In the process, this will make the smaller charging networks (like EA) even more irrelevant.

If Ford happened to own all the gas stations in America, you'd have an idea of what Tesla is about to become. There's a good reason why Tesla stock is priced so high.

  • Finland is also right next to Russia, in fact St Petersburg is only 100 miles from the border. And by "border", that now means "NATO border."

So maybe NATO doesn't really care what Putin thinks about its membership.

  • Racism already is a driving factor in how Republicans draw district maps. There is no other plausible explanation for why there has never been more than one Black representative in a state in which over a quarter of voters are Black.

It's not racist to be capable of identifying the effects of racism. It's not racist to try to eliminate the effects of racism.
