  • By launcher I mean something like Spotlight on Mac OS. The Windows Start menu probably has some of this functionality, at least for launching applications and can be brought up with a key, there are probably alternatives as well. I'm on Linux and use Rofi for this.

I don't mean a large program necessary for launching games, I mean a very lightweight program that can launch your games, or any other app, and more.

  • I like y'all. When I see @hexbear I know what I am about to read isn't going to be thinly veiled racism or capitalist bootlicking, while both less common on Lemmy than Reddit still do make their appearance. I like your bantz and images. Also special shoutout to the Disco poster.

  • For most games, including ones on Steam this is what I do.

Being up program launcher with key combination.
Start typing name of game, hit enter.
Then if Steam is not open Steam launches,. Game launches.

Get yourself a launcher program. Having to bring up Steam and search a library of dozens of games seems maddening when you could just type a few letters.

  • There is no person the economic turnaround is not directly benefiting.

I call bs. I'm not suggesting it's hurting anyone but there are definitely those who's financial situation is no better. We need stronger social services, not just growth.

  • I think Ubuntu and some other Linux distros are arguably more idiot proof than Windows, especially if used by a child with no former experience with anything. The issue of course, is that people just expect every piece of software to work out of the box, and much software that gets advertised to people, including games, targets Windows. Yes, most stuff works with compatibility layers now and more software is targeting Linux as well. However as soon as a person encounters a piece of software where something doesn't just work they will probably ditch the OS, not look for fixes or an alternative, especially for something like a game where there is FOMO attached.

  • If you're worried about messing anything up the safest option is to simply format the unused space and set it's mount point to some directory of your choosing.

Another option I think would be to clone your boot partition to the beginning of the unallocated space, clone your root partition to the unallocated space after that, delete the old partitions, grow your root partition, and then reinstall and reconfigure your boot loader. All this should be done from a portable Linux install.

  • The model makes no sense.

Consider how it affects $60 AAA games vs close to free $1 games, it's wildly disproportional and somehow the $1 game dev starts paying significantly earlier. Now consider how it affects games that make far less than a dollar per user, this is true of many free-with-in-game-purchase mobile games.

Then consider demos, refunds, piracy, and advisarial attacks.

It would have been simpler, more balanced approach, and have none of the pitfalls if they had just gone with a profit share scheme.

  • 7000 people is misleading. Being a general purpose game engine it has to be everything for everybody. An engine developed for a single game can be simpler, and once it is done, making the game will be simpler than it will be in Unity. Also those 7000 people are doing way more things than develop an engine.

That said, an engine like Unity can save a massive amount of time, especially for games that are medium scope. It's these games where developing engine code and tooling would both take a lot of time and the advantages would likely go unnoticed.

  • Over a decade ago when I was big into gaming it was the best option over competition like Ventrilo and TeamSpeak. Still have a server to this day even though many gamers seem to have moved onto talking over Discord voice calls or channels.

  • Firefox+uBlock (web browser)
    MEncoder (video encoder)
OBS (screen recording and streaming software)
    Inkscape (vector illustration software)
    Mumble (VoIP chat room server/client/protocol)
Julia (programming language great for scripting and mathematics)

    For Unix systems:
    Wezterm (terminal multiplexor)
    i3 (window manager)
