  • This is assuming - like digital media - some one took the time to spend his own free time to make copies of a physical medium.

There is no way of knowing whether the person has copyright or stole the first copy.

Or compare school books: the whole class buys one copy together, makes copies for every person to share costs. Likewise, a whole family can chip in to buy a car - you wouldn't force them to buy a car each.

  • Suppose some dude on the street hands out books for free and gives you a copy. Does it make you unethical for accepting one? Would it be different online?

Suppose your government charges a "blank media tax" on storage devices to "compensate" creators with the assumption you already "illegally" download their content, didn't you already pay for it anyway?

What if you're downloading stuff as a hobby but you'd never pay for it if that would be the only other option, did anyone lose anything of value?

  • The free market is much more efficient and better for the public.

I think we can all agree privatiation of pretty much everything didn't work out that well

  • It's good at destroying other OSs that may be installed alongside though

  • I don't know who has to hear this but

  • You can also get YouTube channels on RSS

  • For me, this was the case. Got throttled to dial-up-like speed for a while, but I believe they gave up on this practice long ago. This was at least 20 years ago.

  • Maybe unrelated but what I do when I find a good channel: I click their name, go to their videos tab and look if there's other good stuff. Often videos a bit older have very few views while the newer one has loads, which makes me think nobody ever clicks through all this.

But I also don't log in to Youtube. I had a separate Youtube account until they forced me to use a Google account. I can always delete my YouTube cookies when the recommendations get to shitty.

  • Nothing will be done, I wouldn't sell my Shell shares yet.

  • My phone is on Android 8 and I could swear there was a dark mode option before that got removed in some update.

  • About 10% of those have an adblocker if I read correctly? I find that hard to believe. Maybe people who leave telemetry enabled are just different.

  • No, none of that. I don't think I'll ever own a home or retire so when I save up a little, I'd rather spend it on traveling.

  • I've been doing side jobs since I was 13. I never spent any of my own money while living with my parents. After finishing school, worked for some years and then traveled for a few years. While traveling, I also worked (for free food/accommodation mostly). You really don't have to be rich, just be frugal.

  • I found Peertube and thought it's much better than YouTube but I just couldn't find any content.

I once created an account for Mastodon because I thought it was something else, I didn't expect a Twitter clone and I have no interest in Twitter.

  • I once found an abandoned kitten and gave it a gentle wash and he was fine. Did you use cold water or something?
