  • Haha thanks for the great suggestions. I've been on mobile only the past few weeks, but will try to do more in this format moving forward.

  • It's because you are using a VPN. You always get a ton more captchas when using a VPN on some websites. Mainly because they don't want you using one, so you can be tracked for ads.

  • Yeah it's been manageable on our instance so far. I'd say our admin team manage most of the reports if the community mods don't get to them within an hour or two. Works well for smaller instances, but I can see how it wouldn't scale well at LWs size.

  • Hard agree. All we get from the Democrats is more of the same economically and military, but with some feel good identity politics (i.e. that don't in any way threaten corpos, just provide more markets) and socially progressive vibes. Still better than the alternative sure, but they are just sprinkling glitter on a turd to make it look appealing. There's zero interest towards actually addressing social/financial inequality, reigning in the power of corpos, separating money from politics, or basically changing the economic status quo in any meaningful way. It's a sad state of affairs, and absolutely no wonder leftists aren't enthused to vote for Harris. It's basically a vote for keeping things exactly as they are now, which is not what voters want at all. US politics is so corrupted by money now that a government of the people for the people is just a distant memory. And this talk of reforming the electoral college is just more window dressing, seems to me.

  • There a whole article about Russian disinformation on this topic here. They certainly did have a pact with the Nazis. Your argument is basically "it didn't happen, but if it did then it the West forced us into it" which is a 100% classic disinformation line. It's like when Putin says there is no war with Ukraine, but if there is it's because the West forced us to do it.

  • Well at least it gives us some idea of their politics.

  • Oh Elon

    Jump
  • tbh it looks a lot more like parody to me. Also, please by mindful of community rule 5.

  • Ah sorry man, I didn't check it out too thoroughly.

  • A bit of self-promotion here, but check out !fediverse_vs_disinfo@lemmy.dbzer0.com if you want to stay up to date on recent disinformation campaigns. It's obviously not going to solve the problem, but it's one more tool to help identify and fight the disinfo peddlers.

  • You can optionally create and maintain your own list on our hosted wiki. Any dbzer0 user can access the wiki to create/edit pages.

  • Ok, I suppose it's best to err on the side of caution.

  • I don't think there's currently a way to automatically sync watch history across devices, but I'd love to be wrong about that tbh, because it would be handy.

  • For me it's not just about ads, it's also about surveillance. With FreeTube you can have subscriptions without needing a linked YouTube account, and all the subscription/watch history data is stored locally. So, it's a good opt-out of Google/YouTube surveillance. And you can import/export subscriptions if you need to transfer to another device. I happen to use FreeTube for this because it is frequently updated and I like the setup, but other options exist - I'm not really promoting this option over other options, just raising some awareness about it.

  • That's a good suggestion, I just haven't had the motivation to get that setup yet since Usenet currently meets my needs. But I'm sure it would work, yes.

  • Getting into the weeds a bit here lol. I do use a VPN on my personal PC, but on the media server where I have my *arr stack, I've found that using a VPN, even with split tunneling configured, allows certain TV websites to detect I'm using a VPN and block streaming content. If I wasn't using a DNS proxy, or if I ran the stack on a separate server, it probably wouldn't be an issue, but I'm not so it is :p. I'll add that if I am using only Usenet then I prefer not to run a VPN since it's reasonably safe IMO to raw dog that content, since a VPN always has some overhead involved in terms of bandwidth and latency.

  • Yeah, you can integrate torrents into the stack, afaik. But due to some technical considerations I don't like to run a VPN on my media server, and in my country you definitely need one for torrents.
