I guess the whole idea of this move is to force self-hosters to pay for a Plex pass. But it's a funny demographic to try to strongarm into a subscription. Most tech savvy self-hosters won't think twice about spinning up a Jellyfin instance instead, especially given that it's FOSS. And for those folks with a lifetime Plex pass this makes no difference.,

It also means they will now have official payment info to tie everyones identity to their Plex server. So if the cops come-a-knocking they'll be fully able to comply with information requests.

They aren't, all their server does is handle the login authentication afaik, and then streaming happens directly from the server to the user.

It's a bit of a shame we don't see any significant new features in this release. Piefed seems to be developing at a much faster pace compared to Lemmy, which is a bit embarrassing tbh.

What sort of topsy turvy logic are you going for here? That the best way the Democrats can oppose the Republicans is by giving them exactly what they want and voting to confirm all their nominees and legislation? The Democrats have been close to useless as an opposition party so far, because they can't bring themselves to oppose anything in case it makes them look bad to Trump supporters.

It depends which instance you are on. Some instances are full of mods that censor everything that doesn't fit their ideology. Other instances are more relaxed with their moderation approaches. It definitely pays to shop around a bit before you settle on an instance that is a good fit for you.

On dbzero we have a governance community and instance users have the right to vote out mods/admins if they are unpopular. But most instances are run in a much more top-down BDFL (benevolent dictator for life) fashion.
