  • The shortened version of Nippon is also considered an unusable slur where im from as well since its only ever used with negative intent. Its interesting to read about the different perspectives of this word around the world. Since the word is offensive to some Japanese people I should refrain from using the world online.

  • "All Dams are temporary" but also modern dams have methods to release the sediment. I am not an expert on dams so which is it? Do modern dams solve this problem or will they still be rendered obsolete by this in time?

  • Do Japanese people consider this a slur? To me it seems like one instance of people using a word with negative connotations doesnt make it a slur or our list of slurs would be far greater. In most instances its just an english shortened version of Japanese.

I looked it up and it seems there is debate over this with mostly Japanese Americans finding the word offensive due to historical context with most others just viewing it as a shortened version of Japanese. (I'm mostly making this comment because Jap is censored in one of my favourite RTS games where the Japanese are a highly used nation and I hate having to use the full word over a 3 letter abv)

  • This in my opinion shouldnt be viewed as a bad thing. If they do then they are joining the fediverse and bringing all their walled garden content over to an open protocol. If this happens we still have the power to choose a server that does not federate with them while their users also have the choice to move to a server that better aligns with their values.

If a big tech company hosted a server and participated like a good citizen then it should be welcomed but if they federate ads then everyone would criticize them and defederate.

  • The problem with using a bot to post vs posting things you find interesting is that the bot doesn't match the level of interest. But because we have the option to hide bot accounts you can absolutely use bots to populate your community with content and those that dont like it can block the bot or have disabled bot accounts altogether.

  • This is surprising. I thought Valorant was very strict on harassment since it had the biggest female playerbase of any multiplayer comp shooter. To beat dota in toxicity is impressive (however its probably only because no one under 18 plays dota)

  • There isn't many of those so its probably best to just put any you find in bestoflemmy

  • The only problem the fediverse has is content.

Compare Lemmy to mastodon. Mastodon is 10x the size but Lemmy is 10x more interesting an active. Became people on Lemmy make posts and discuss and joke and fight and its fun and new users can join in easily and add.

  • Beautiful, the photo doesnt even look like it was taken on this planet.

  • ive been using linux for about 4 years now and I still have no idea where the things are kept. Im getting the feel for it slowly like everything flatpak is in a hidden folder .var my solution is to just make a simlink to folders I want to vist and put them in my home folder.

  • Yeah that tracks with his election catch phrase "to big to rig"

  • Outright ban is not good. They need to give people an off ramp. Move officials to other platforms. Promote those accounts. Release news first on mastodon or bluesky and part article writers to use that screenshot over the x post.

  • Thats less than I thought, considering how much content goes through this server each year.

  • Hey Dave, how much storage space is this lemmy instance using out of interest?

  • If I get sent back I'm bring this person

  • "Its easy I just need to dodge that attack" 5seconds later I die to the exact same attack thay killed me the last 50 times.

  • There are stupid comments everywhere but the reddit user is a unique type of user that is infamous all across the internet.

  • oh the times ive seen people at my work try an sell soemthing to an angry customer. It always fails and results in the customer being pissed off and insulted. It should be obvious that if someone is paying you to solve a problem and your software is not working and causing them to complain they are not in the mood to buy another thing to solve the problem they are already paying you to solve.

  • Recall?
