If I was just downloading stuff, I wouldn't be using a VPN. Not sure if it's illegal but it's just not worth it for the police to go after people who just download. With torrents, due to the way they work, you're also uploading. That's the reason you should use a VPN when downloading with torrents.
The only way to find out it was you, would be to ask the VPN provider. Mullvad has a perfect track record of not keeping logs tho, so it's very unlikely they're gonna get anything from them. All that work wouldn't even be worth it for someone just downloading some music like you do.
I have my torrent client running 24/7 connected to a different VPN to my home country, Germany, as well and nothing's ever happened, even though Germany is pretty strict when it comes to this stuff.
Is that also how custom ROMs like LineageOS do it? My phone (Nothing Phone 1) isn't supported anymore and it has really annoying issues that I'd like to fix by becoming the maintainer for that ROM but I have no idea how that whole thing works and where to find how to do this.
I used to use Arch too but I switched to Fedora because everything I installed manually was just installed by default already there. Also nice to be able to update my system from GNOME Software.
You can also just use your phone. The app is called Kore and is free and open source. It connects over the local network, so you don't need an IR pointer or anything like that.
Edit: Just noticed that the comment you replied to already mentioned Kore. Anyway, I actually prefer using it over a remote. I always have my phone with me, I can use the phone's keyboard and I can share stuff like YouTube links directly to it.
The Deutsche Bahn uses Linux for the displays in their trains, that show you the next stops, at least. Saw the systemd startup thingy on one of those displays once when the train restarted while I was in it.
Really cool how even phones in that price range have 120hz screens now, my current phone (Nothing Phone 1) is also in that price range and has a display like that. IPhone users should really be madder at Apple for not putting 120hz screens on the non-pro phones, even though they cost way more than these Android phones.
