  • We aren't going to get off of oil tomorrow and alberta is throwing a temper tantrum about leaving Canada. We need time to invest in green energy, public transit, denser housing, and electric vehicles extensively before we can significantly cut our oil demand. Even getting off oil as a fuel source, we will still depend on it for plastics and lubricants until we can develop new solutions there.

I hope if carney is going forward with a pipeline it will at least need extensive environmental assessments and monitoring.

Carney praises carbon pricing in his book Values, but had to strategically cancel it as he saw consumer carbon pricing dividing more canadians (still in effect for industry, where the tax can spur the most impactful changes). Its easier to get people to change by building an economy that less carbon dependent than it is to tax consumers into making the right choice. For example, building quality, reliable high speed rail would get people to switch their prefered transportation method just for their personal convenience, with a side effect of being more energy effecient and less carbon intensive than driving.

Carney also praises green energy as part of a sustainable future. All of this gives me more hope than if Pierre was PM, whom has pretty much rejected anything concerning the environment in his political career

  • I'm so glad Canada elected someone who is well versed in both climate change and economics, he might actually be able to build a more climate friendly economy in Canada.

Our other option wants to deny climate change as an issue and reject just about anything that hurts profits for the benefit of the climate, fresh water, ecosystems, or animals.

  • Which could be 10, 2000 sq/ft single story units or 40, 2000 sq/ft apartments in a 4 story building. We cant just keep letting cities build outward and cover farmlands with endless swathes of single family homes and barren lawns.

  • I get the sentiment here, but a half acre is a lot of land and the development of large suburban lots is a big thing that contributed to the housing crisis in north america. We need to diversify housing and increase the number of 1000-2000 sqft apartments as well. Relatively small homes on smaller lots (1/4 acre and under) should also be being built.

  • I'd much rather chat with a stranger than stare at my phone while waiting around in public. Connecting with strangers over some simple things can be surprisingly heart warming in an increasingly isolating world. Even just chatting about a good deal on soup or enjoying recent sunshine makes my day a little bit better. If you chose to chat with me, my day would be better.

  • I think carney wants policy to speak for itself and parties and mps to vote balanced between how their party and their riding expects them to. I hope it helps stir up the us vs them mentalities and make mps vote a little more independently from their party.

  • Yes fiscally responsible like a ridiculous hwy that he needs to make new laws to build, a ridiculous tunnel under an existing hwy, removing newly built bike lanes, spening millions to rush booze to shelves to undermine a government labor strike, various land scandas. The list goes on and on highlighting these excellent examples of fiscal responsibility.

  • I'd argue the DLCs did more than you imply. The extra modes of transit gave more options to move people, painting a custom park area made cities feel more realistic than premade square parks, universities could be a great centerpiece for a neighborhood. Its not like vanilla was unplayable, but the DLC defintely added more creativity for me.

  • I mean look at ontario's premier who won a 3rd time in an "emergency election" that had the 2nd lowest voter turn out. It defintely wasn't a power grab by ford cause he knew change was coming in the feds and he could not longer blame Trudeau for problems he fails to fix.

I hope ontario somehow forces another election after Carney has some time to make an impact and the Ontario liberals or ndp can put a new face forward for this province.

  • Thinking ford is suddenly a liberal without addressing his ridiculous highway plans, ridiculous tunnel plans, his loyalty to oil coupled with resistance to green energy, gutting of the endangered species act, and greenbelt scandal is ridiculous. Ford is half the problem most people in Ontario hate Trudeau because his polciies failed to help Ontarians, but his charisma managed to blame the feds.

He also promised buck a beer and what we got instead was an increase in beer prices and now you can buy it at every gas station, which i predict in the long term will increase the amount of drinking and driving as well as increase access to alcohol for minors.

  • In wet areas or areas during a snow melt, sump pumps are a big factor. Many people have emergency generators or battery back up pumps if their sump pit has a lot of flow.

Also rural people will often lose power to their water pumps and disinfection equipment for drinking water.

  • We should have social systems to help people over come those fears and protect them from threats, both physical and financial. No one should be forced to be with someone they fear because of finances, childcare, safety, or loneliness.

Not all shitty partners induce fear. I've known some girls who are just head over heels due to how attractive, wealthy, or mostly sweet a guy is. The good times outshine the bad times and they get into the "i can fix him" mentality. My brother is like that where he has gotten away with cheating with nearly every partner he has had. It usually takes the girl months to finally leave him and say its been enough. Hes the chad gym type and genuinely doesn't have to try to pull women. Any time they threaten to leave he gets all sweet, shows up with gifts and acts romantic and sexy just to get caught cheating again next week.

We need to be hard on ourselves sometimes and push manipulative people out of our lives. I think an erosion of IRL friendships has influenced this trend as well. I used to know girls who would band together to help a girl get rid of a shitty guy they were infatuated with but that is much harder to do online than in person.
