  • Agreed, this is the most on topic post we’ve had for a while.

  • Generally conservation of energy applies in a closed system, so wouldn’t apply at the creation of the system.

(Plus we can’t (yet) be sure what caused the Big Bang if it happened)

I’ve always liked the idea that matter, space and time are the way we observe the interactions of fields. So gravity waves make an interesting idea as to how part of it might work

Did you know there is some evidence that our brains are apparently aware of certain events before they actually happen. This isn’t supernatural but possible evidence of something going on outside of the space time we are familiar with. Or that time is not a straightforward arrow in one direction.

  • Pulsars are made of matter, which runs into the how did it all start problem (if there was no big bang to create the matter)

  • Yes, but black holes are an accretion of matter, that as far as we know is locked away until it evaporates. For there to be a net increase in overall matter due to gravitational waves there’d need to be either another source of waves (as in the field theory) or the waves would have to produce matter at a rate in violation of E=mc^2+C (which could be wrong)

  • I think number 1 would need some sort of hosting to cache the image, which would have a cost.

  • It’s certainly an interesting time at the early stages of Lemmy. It’s a real race. Some early front runners like Liftoff! seem to have been left behind.

  • Thanks. What mechanism would cause the gravity waves?

I ask because there is a controversial theory that the universe actually consists of a number of interacting fields. They’ve always been there. What we observe as matter, time etc are the result of those fields.

  • You are perpetuating stereotypes. They have been using computers for at least 30 years as they’ve had the email address that long.

What do you think this certain age is ? What evidence do you have to counter the UN campaign and the actual research? I’m happy to consider alternative viewpoints. Is this something that just seems logical to you?

  • Excuse my ignorance but what is CMB?

  • This is another example of ageism. The key characteristic here is not that they are older but they use an ISP provided email address. They could be 24 with an ISPaccount they’ve used for ten years.

It’s also an example of media stereotyping older people as somehow being affected more, implying they can’t/won’t switch, are somehow not savvy enough with technology to cope and to be less capable.

Look at it this way. If you’ve had an email address for 30 years. How many times did they move house or change car or change phone number. Did they cope with that? Of course they did. And it’s more disruptive when you move physically

The UN is campaigning to stop older people being stigmatised as set in their ways, unable to cop and technologically disadvantaged. Not only does it penalise older people but distracts from the real issue. The issue here isn’t their age but the lack of portability of email addresses which are used as a means of identity.

  • With the proviso that you don’t give it to companies. Use a feature like hide my email or use forwarding from a gmail etc account.

(Companies like Facebook can use your own domain to profile you and your family. Other companies use Facebook services for advertising )

  • Looking through the GitHub it doesn’t look like anyone has commented on a bug for over a month and no one has been assigned to one for much longer.

@Liftoff last posted on Lemmy 21 days ago.

All concerning. Wish someone would say what is happening. I’m sure users would chip in if it’s a funds issue.

  • I’m not sure what’s going on there’s been nothing for several weeks now and over on Matrix no talk of any bug fixes. I posted in the community asking if users can do anything (in case it’s a resource issue) but didn’t here anything

It’s a real shame as other clients are seeing rapid development but it’s falling behind and as you say, the iOS app seems to stop responding and needs tidying up.

  • Yes, this has been a long standing bug. There don’t appear to have been any updates for several weeks, I hope this doesn’t mean Liftoff is no longer actively developed?

  • I’m loving the Mint theme , my favourite one yet. Easy to read but not too bright. Thank you.

  • I think it’s the wrong word here. Pagination is the sequence of numbers used on the pages of a book to identify them.

  • It’s written like hairiness is the absence of bald which makes even less sense.

  • It does odd things in iOS too, will pause for a fraction of a second and then jump.

  • Surely the first method will only work if the instance you are on is already aware of, because it’s already federated.

The way Liftoff searches seems to be different to other apps.

  • I know three in English so there must be more in other languages
