  • You still get free shipping on purchases above $35. I cancelled mine. Figure at the very least it'll cut down on some impulse purchases!

  • I have my Immich library backed up to Backblaze B2 via Duplicacy. That job runs nightly. I also have a secondary sync to Nextcloud running on another server. That said, I need another off prem backup and will likely run a monthly job to my parents house either via manually copying to an external disk then taking it over or setting up a Pi or other low power server and a VPN to do it remotely.

  • Interesting. I do pay for their sync because I was having issues with Syncthing causing conflicts. But I also host a Seafile server locally and it is syncing my Obsidian vault with every computer/device I sign into and haven't had problems so far.

  • Obsidian for sure. Look at the Excalidraw plugin for handwriting/drawing. It's quite good.

  • I have 1.8TB of pics and videos on my server and it all runs fine in browsers or the app. Perhaps you could look at disabling the machine learning portion of it to save some overhead? For reference, my setup is:

Server - HP Micro server G8 Phone - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Tablet - Samsung Galaxy S7+

None of these are high end anymore, hell the server is ancient by computer standards. But I did put a GPU in it for ex hardware transcoding as well as machine learning for Immich.

  • I'm a noob still regarding self hosting (started last year) but maybe I can help? I struggled with it too but eventually got it working on my unraid server and I love it.

  • Fair enough. I appreciate the context and additional information. Gives me things to think about. I'm currently using Obsidian even though it's not FOSS, the file format is simple text files in folders making "escaping" the ecosystem easy, should I need to. Notesnook of course doesn't do that, but they do have a much better handling on tasks/to-do within your PKM than Obsidian does.

I'll admit I love notes apps. Have for years. So any new shiny one that comes out I at least try it even if I'm happy with Obsidian. Personal failing, I suppose.

  • I see. Admittedly it's been a minute since I've logged into a new session of Notesnook. But accessing the web portal prompts for my login name, password, and then a 2FA code sent to my email address. Within the app (at least on Android) there is an option for no privacy, some privacy, and max privacy. Which have various behaviors when you navigate away from the app or close and reopen. I'm no expert, but do these sound like zero knowledge in this context?

I've still not decided whether I'll stick with them, but I do like the app and was able to get a year of their pro membership for less than half off, so I figured I'd give it a try and at the very least support the devs to some degree.

  • Not defensive at all, just didn't know where your comment came from. Do you have a link I can check out regarding that? Happy to read up on it. As far as self host, Dev team stated in their discord channel that they are still planning on it but want to get it buttoned up because once it's launched they can't take it back, paraphrasing what he actually said.

  • I had cloud sync errors on every game I tried on both Linux desktop and steam deck. I was pulling my hair out trying to fix it. In my case it turned out to be my Adguard Home instance blocking some or all of the required links that steam uses for the sync. I manually whitelisted all of them and it's all gravy now.

  • Yeah, I'm not sure TBH. I have it sync with my Nextcloud instance. Within the web browser it shows up in the Nextcloud Tasks app

  • I've tried to like Logseq but with it's outline focused approach, it didn't jive with what I use a pkm for.

  • I didn't make that claim though. Regardless, that wouldn't matter in a self-host situation.

  • Obsidian is great, and I agree the sync is too much. It does work flawlessly but Im going to try Syncthing again after my one year is up.

Another newcomer that is promising is Acreom. Doesnt require an account on PC. Currently does on mobile though. But like Obsidian, it is a pile of markdown files. No weird database silliness like Joplin does.

  • I had a similar need and settled on tasks.org. Depending on your needs, this may not fit. It's more of a Google/Microsoft tasks replacement. It's been really nice for my needs.

  • I'm on Oathbringer right now, and other than the physical size of the books, I don't really have any complaints. I legit had to switch to Kindle version because the paperback was a pain to hang onto while reading.

  • For sure give Red Rising a shot. First book gets going pretty quickly and I like the sci-fi with spaceships, energy weapons/shields, but also some fantasy elements mixed in. I haven't found a series like it so far.

  • Yep. My whole career is based on fixing MS bullshit. So I guess I should be somewhat grateful for the turd.

That said, Ive had some perplexing issues with Pop!_OS myself, but was able to get it fixed by searching or posting questions here. So far it's been a pleasant experience.

  • Yeah, handwriting can be added to Obsidian, but it's a bit hacky and I don't use it. As far as instant sync, it is solid, but expensive. Some folks use Syncthing but I couldn't get it to work reliably so I but the bullet and paid for Obsidian Sync.

  • Mint, Endeavor, Zorin, Ubuntu, probably more I'm forgetting. Landed on Pop!_OS and am mostly happy so far.
