  • I had a very brief stint with base Opera on mobile, too, but it was so brief that I didn't really dig into it. When I used it, it did have some QoL things I liked, but Firefox mobile caught up pretty quick and I ditched it. Before Opera, I was using Dolphin for a while.

Have you seen Fennec or Iceraven? Nice little Firefox forks for Android that prioritize privacy and add a few great tools. I would have mentioned Mull, too, but sadly it was abandoned recently.

  • I've heard lots of good things about Kiwi, and I vaguely remember trying it. Never dug into FF Nightly. I'm a little wary of Mozilla right now, but part of me is also confident that they're not being malicious, despite what's been happening. I'm just more of an "err on the side of caution" person.

Does Nightly have anything that's radically different than stable? I'm curious.

  • Ah no, I mean the government backdoor. Last we knew, Telegram was threatened, then it suddenly quiet and Premium launches. Fishy. So potentially the federal government has access.

Sorry, I'm bad at providing context. When it comes to another user accessing your messages, you should be right. However, when it comes to the US and Russian governments, its probably getting read already. And we all know what ties and connections Elon has there. So Grok can probably read them.

  • I keep them locked and change the passwords once in a while. Basically, once my address starts getting a ton of spam and scams per day, I stop using that address. Only the one I'm currently using shows notifications. The rest only show when there's a login.

I don't change too often. I still only have a handful.

  • Yeah, that's true. I still use Signal as the main app to keep in contact with friends and family, though. It's not like we ever discuss anything important, I just don't like having my privacy openly invaded by apps like TG. Its affronting and insulting.

I can't think of any other alternative to Matrix that has bot support, though. I guess just be careful of which instance, because I've read that there's a lot of shady stuff that goes down in Matrix groups sometimes.

  • Your secret chats are already being read. Hell, secret chats are probably the first to be read.

A secret chat is only for local privacy, meaning if someone got access to your device they can't find them, nor will you get notifications (in case your partner is watching your screen).

Back when we just had SMS and MMS, they had secret chats, too. They were blatantly marketed as tools to cheat on your partner. GO SMS was one of the first to use them. Its not so blatant anymore, but its still the primary use for "secret" chats.

I remember reading an article that someone figured out everyone's GO SMS images (even secret ones) were uploaded online without any security whatsoever. You could put in the url and some random numbers and get any pictures and voice clips ever sent. And they never fixed it even after it was leaked.

So yeah, not so secret. You want secure.

Edit: Context: Sorry, my ADHD gets the better of me. I mean that there's more likely than not a government backdoor. Other users are unlikely reading your messages, but your messages are more than likely being scanned. Just be careful if you use TG.

  • 99% of the time a dual boot doesn't work its because of Windows. There should be no real reason that Mint fails anything simple as long as its compatible with your system. I've seen others report that Windows will occasionally destroy a dual boot when updating.

  • If you want something more like the fediverse itself, then Matrix. If you want something closer to Telegram out of the box without setup, then Signal or SimpleX.

  • I predicted this years and years ago when the internet was still young. I'm probably already well scanned and filed away like the rest of us, but as a rule of thumb I always come up with new usernames for everything just to be safe. I'm never the same on more than two platforms max. I've never connected my usernames to my identity, I've just always been paranoid about it since dial up was a thing.

Plus, I like the change. You get infinite new starts and it really gives you time to think and build on your first impressions. I highly recommend it. Not even my MMO accounts use the same character names from any other MMO. I have many abandoned emails, and never name them anything similar.

If you're going to be online, always keep moving. Keep changing, keep remaking yourself, and do it often. The same goes for avatars. Change them often and try not to use too many from actual hobbies you like. AI slop is out there, just generate something locally or pick something random that looks cool.

It's not impossible to still fingerprint someone like this, but that doesn't mean make it easy for big corp to file you away and monetize your existence.

  • This is probably like... number one on the "my partner might be a doomsday prepper" checklist.

  • I had a similar case. Was going crazy about the horizontal lines on my screen. They weren't always there, just when a certain color took up most the screen or when a window was placed in a certain position. Suddenly bam, my whole screen looked like grip tape.

I started troubleshooting the display, compositor, checking the software for some sort of night mode or eye protection. Nuthin.

Then my friend says, "Are you using display port or HDMI? Try switching." I switched to HDMI and god fucking dammit if it didn't just work. Afaik it was something to do with the nvidia proptietary gpu drivers, because when I'd roll them back it didn't happen.

  • Telling my sister I'd go to her goddamn Memorial Day party. My sleep schedule was fine and I figured I'd make it, but my ADHD is on full screech and now I'm overtired panicking.

But my sister and my brother in law are "good old country bumpkins" that tell me it's all in my head, or I'm making excuses. I hope they have anxiety and severe panic attacks for the rest of their lives starting today.

  • But I like how squishy and soft they are from the microwave...

  • Alternatively, you could use a TUI file manager. Once you get the navigation down you can manage things pretty quickly. Especially with ones that have options for dual directory layouts, like Midnight Commander or vifm.

  • Yazi, Superfile, Midnight Commander (my favorite), or Ranger. I'm sure there's more, but those are the ones I know.

  • Well, mom said I could be anything when I grew up...

  • Check out Atuin. Its another must have for me. When you push up arrow, it shows your command history in a very pleasing list. You can even generate account keys to migrate your history between PCs, but I've never bothered with it. You can also search past commands on the history menu.

You don't need an account for it. That's only for the migration keys.

  • That's a damn good price, wow. I'm avoiding electric grinders atm, because I live in an apartment building and sound travels pretty loudly through it.

It's honestly the plastic waste that gets me in the end. There's been days I wake up late and wish I could make a coffee in under a minute, but have to go without my morning caffeine and it sucks. Even if it tasted awful, at least I'd have it.

May have to look into those bio-degradeable pods. I have a friend in England that told me about one (I can't remember the name of it), but the machine and the pods aren't available in the US.
