  • Running a media server with bulk storage from an external HDD is just a terrible experience and recipe for issues, and doesn't give a nice experience with a full library to select from at a whim anywhere in the world (like what streaming provides). Also, depending on library size, not even possible.

I have ~20tb of media on my server, which isn't even that much, no chance that'll run well in that configure you mention. It's by no means a beefy server either, it's a small ITX mobo in a case with a shitload of HDD bays.

  • Pirating is not really much cheaper TBH...my media server, including power, has to run for something like 6-7 years without upgrades or repairs to break even with what Netflix would cost in that same time frame. It's not about saving money, it's about not giving it to them.

  • My naming scheme is usually Area_Type_Location, e.g. i have a table lamp on a small table in a corner of my livingroom. the bulb in it is named Livingroom_Light_CornerTable

    As for movable devices, i name them Type_Model_Function/Owner, e.g. Phone_Pixel8_ExcessShiv or Tablet_Ipad_MainControl

  • Definitely go for prowlarr. you select the indexers you want to search through when you set it up the first time and then you just search for whatever you're looking for in the searchbar and prowlarr will look through all the indexers you've selected and give you the result.

  • OP is specifically asking for something like torrentio (searching a large collection of indexers from one place) but without streamio. So no it's not like that, but it is specifically what OP is asking for.

  • Maybe aside from needing to select the trackers you want to search (which is IMO still very intuitive) manually, how is prowlarr not an easy interface? There ia a search bar that you just write in, and that's it.

  • I have my doubts that it makes a significant difference in actual print quality though. Looking at polymaker for example, they specify a tolerance of +-0.02mm on diameter for 97% of the material, and the article mentions an effective accuracy of this sensor of +-0.015mm.

Maybe the best tuned perfectly calibrated hobbyist printer will see a difference, but for a regular well-tuned printer I think this is is more of a cool novelty mod.

  • Even Prusa's newest printer, the core one, is no where close to BL printers of last year in terms of performance and print quality, despite costing nearly twice as much. BL is ahead of all it's competitors in both the hobbyist and pro-sumer market in both performance and UX, it really sucks that there isn't something to fill that market now that they've pulled this crap. I'm not sure what parts he couldn't get, but the few I know that do have BL printers, only one has had to replace a part and it was no issue getting it from BL whatsoever.

  • It uses a torrent file to download parts (temporarily) just like you use the same torrent to permanently download and seed. Only difference is they (the client/user) never keep the files for seeding, no different than if you downloaded, watched, and then deleted the file and torrent from your client.

  • Yes it is 100% leeching on the people that do download and store files, I never said it wasn't, I merely explained how they managed without massive OPEX. Yes these services only work as long as some people keep files and seed, that's also why they suck for things than are >1 year old.

  • What keeps me away from streaming site is that I'm confused about how the sustain themselves. Aren't the costs giganormous to constantly be streaming stuff around?

I think they're just doing it the same way you do TBH, they just force sequential download of a torrent and allow their users to watch as it downloads as a normal torrent, but then auto-deletes content as it goes as well. That way they don't need to have a massive back end to handle the streaming since it's done like regular P2P torrenting and handled entirely in the client side.

  • I fail to see the useful benefit of this in a home printing environment TBH. It's a cool gimmick, and I remember seeing it long ago in the voron discord when they first developed it on a v2.4(or was it a trident? I can't remember...), but I don't really see what use it has for hobbyist printing.

Does anyone need consecutive unmonitored batch printing of several plates full at home? It seems much more like something you'd want in a production/print farm environment where it can streamline mass production.
