My story exactly. Company still has summer parties but they cut a lot of benefits, started firing people and the level of gaslighting went up dramatically. I was looking for something else but fortunately stayed long enough to get fired and cash out. Found new job in 1.5 months. I'm almost grateful to them for being such assholes.
Because everyone else is on WhatsApp. I moved most of my friends to Signal but I'm in some clubs that use WhatsApp groups to communicate. Yes, I could leave but then I wouldn't know about many activities.
Thanks for that. I had a discussion about it in another thread but without concrete numbers.
you are mostly paying for a boutique manufacturing process
You're also in a way supporting an NGO lobbying for repairability and sustainability. We've seen progress on this front in EU and it's possible Fairphone made some impact by showing what is technically achievable. It's hard for Google to say that replaceable battery simply can't be done when you have another company doing it.
Personally I find $300-$400 donation to be too much. If they would establish donations plan I would probably support them. I do donate to Signal from time to time and other OS projects regularly. But I'm happy that enough people are willing to donate to keep them going.
Trump writes about "complete elimination of potentially one of the biggest and most powerful Nuclear Weapons anywhere in the World". They completely lost their minds.
MacBooks are some of the best computers ever sold.
Yeah, but that's just one generation out of many. For me MacBooks have terrible keyboards (personal preference, I know, but I hate them), had very common issues with battery, terrible reparability and stupid features like the Touch Bar (which they finally removed proving right everyone who said it's dumb). So yeah, new MacBooks have great performance but overall the line was not that great IMHO. Very nice design, good quality, not great usability.
Republicans will control the supreme court for the next 20 years. We will see couple of resignations soon so they can appoint younger, crazier judges. Hopefully progressive democrats will be able to stop the slide towards dictatorship but I don't except any swinging back.
A lot of people do it for dental care and plastic surgeries already. It's exactly the same with everything else. People here don't seem to realize you have private healthcare in Europe where you can just pay for the visit. The problem is that you also have to pay for the stay. I will give you two examples. Wisdom tooth extraction costs around 300 euros in Spain vs $500 in US. Doesn't make sense to fly to Spain to do it. Tooth implant costs around 1000 euros in Spain vs $3500 in US. Now paying for a single flight would make sense but tooth implant requires multiple visits spanning around 3 months. If you have to fly twice or stay in Spain for 3 months it doesn't make sense.
But if you're already going to Europe and want to fix your tooth while you're here you can totally do it. A lot of people that live in US but have family in Europe do it.
Probably. I'm not saying that Frairphone is bad and that what they are doing doesn't have any value. What I'm saying is that their phones were always too expensive for me and now that there are other phones with 7-8 year lifespan on the market it's even harder to justify the expense. I'm glad that enough people had the money to support Fairphone and I'm grateful for their contribution in changing the legislation. Maybe in 5-6 years, when I have to change my phone, I will get a Fairphone.
