  • Fuck off with this bullshit. If Canada gets annexed, any hint of US democracy will already have been dead and buried.

  • During the live coverage yesterday, CBC was saying that the issue wasn't affecting all users.

  • Good news, CBC just called that he lost his seat. Good fucking riddance, bye-bye PP!

  • King of the Hill. I love the characters so much, especially the dynamic between Hank and Bobby.

  • I think what's truly ridiculous is that we're subsidizing fossil fuels so goddamn much that no one even knows or can estimate how much. Our habitat is dying and we're using our tax dollars to kill it. We're funding our own extinction and we can't even keep track of how much money we pump into it.

  • If I were having high-stakes conversations, I might agree, but any slight delays in updates is unlikely to affect me. I'm not a high-stakes target of any sort.

    • IronFox (web browser)
    • Fossify Caller app
    • QUIK (SMS)
    • Molly (Signal)
    • Libretube (YouTube)
    • Thunder (Lemmy).

    Oops, all FOSS! :)

The only proprietary apps that see regular use on my phone are my banking app and Spotify.

  • I'm so fucking tired of Americans saying shit like "omg Canada as the 51st state would totally skew our elections Democrat, get owned Trump!"

The reality is, in any scenario where Canada gets annexed by the US, American democracy will not exist anymore by then. Even if there are fake elections, we'd most likely not be allowed to vote (à la Puerto Rico, as you point out).

I do appreciate someone pointing out how utterly enraged us Francophones would be if subjected to US rule.

  • I will never truly forgive the Libs for that. "2015 will be the last federal elections under first-past-the-post", just to turn around mere weeks after being elected and saying "people just wanted electoral reform because they were tired of Harper, now that they have a government they're satisfied with they no longer feel the need for reform" (this is essentially exactly what Trudeau said in an interview with Le Devoir in late 2015)

  • I really hope the Cons lose massively in this election and back off from this alt-right Trumpian swing they've been on under Poilievre.

Not that the previous versions of the Conservative Party were any better, but at least they tried to hide how hateful and stupid they were. Now it's all just out in the open. It's exhausting.

  • Definitely don't disagree Cons are an economic nightmare, but I just think any PM in 2008 would have similar stats, regardless of party.

  • I despise Harper as much as anyone, but is this really a result of his awful policies or more so because he happened to be Prime Minister during the 2008 global economic crisis?

Let's not fall into the same trap as the "Fuck Trudeau" crowd, the PM isn't a supreme all-powerful overlord who has full control of the economy. They don't even have that much direct power over the Canadian economy, let alone global factors like the 2008 recession or the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • I definitely don't disagree with your point, and while I didn't think from your comment that you'd benefit from a reminder of what kind of person Harper is, some people reading these comments might not be as familiar with him.

It's all too easy to fall into the trap of rehabilitating awful politicians from the past when faced with the new generation of awful politicians. I've seen way too many people, even progressives, yearn for the George W. Bush years in the face of the Trump presidency. Like sure, Trump (or Poilievre) might be worse, but that doesn't mean Bush (or Harper) weren't/aren't awful.

  • What do you mean, eventually? Outside of Québec with the Bloc, Canada is already for all-intents-and-purposes a two-party system. Most people I know more closely align with NDP or Green platforms. Most people I know still vote Liberal.

It continuously astounds me that the NDP and Greens don't make more noise about electoral reform.

  • Harper's been to Mar-a-Lago for events, he's been on Ben Shapiro's podcast, he's been the face of not one but two PragerU videos.

Harper isn't some more respectable, lost form of conservative from yesteryear. Because those don't actually exist. If Harper were running today instead of 20 years ago he would 100% go by the Trumpist playbook.

  • Fuck you for voting against my human rights! 😊

  • Yeah I'm French and the Compose key works great, at least for the limited number of diacritics in French.

  • I had to know the context for this so I looked it up, it's from a marketing promo for the 1995 WWF WrestleMania arcade game. The whole video just screams 1990s.
