  • Edit: why was this downvoted?

I'd assume less pro-Churchill sentiment, more "people don't read articles and are wondering why you brought up Churchill"

  • "Quebecers" is absolutely the worst demonym I've ever had the misfortune of hearing.

I'd honestly rather use "Quebecans" or "Quebecinites" than "Quebecers". That being said, I'm francophone so I just say "québécois et québécoises".

  • I recommend posting in !selfhosted@lemmy.world, really helpful community there (although I'd refrain from specifically mentioning piracy).

I've heard Hetzner is quick to crack down on piracy. Some VPS hosters advertise that they don't acknowledge DMCA requests, such as Njalla and 1984 (I've never used these, just found them by searching Lemmy). If you want to go with a traditional hoster I'll echo what the other person said and recommend Gluetun to bind your container to a VPN service.

For security, if it's just for you and your partner I'd just setup a Wireguard server on the VPS and tunnel into it that way. You'll have to setup the VPN on any device you want to access your server with, which is a hassle, but I'd much prefer the small hassle than the constant worrying of hosting publicly-accessible services. Otherwise, I'd setup something like Crowdsec or Fail2Ban.

  • This person pops up every time someone on Lemmy mentions web browsers to aggressively deride Mozilla for being mostly funded by Google (which is a fair point that I agree with) and then they turn around and recommend Chromium-based browsers.

I've tried and I found it difficult to engage in good-faith conversation with them.

  • "Public benefit corporation" is such an oxymoron, I know it's cliché to say this but it reads like something out of 1984.

If your goal is truly to benefit the public, why wouldn't you start a non-profit? It's because they want profits, which will always be at odds with the interests of the public.

  • Honestly, you might just have to wait until she's done with puberty. This just sounds like a typical teenager whose brain is addled with hormones. It'll die down with time.

  • Mull was part of the DIvestOS project, which has recently been discontinued.

For a similarly strengthened fork, I've been using IronFox after seeing it recommended on Lemmy.

  • They meant pinging your server from another device, I assume.

What error(s) do you get when you try to SSH into your server?

By "can't access containers", I assume you mean via devices you're trying to connect to the server with? Can you still access the stuff you're running in the containers directly on the server via localhost?

I'll echo what the other commenter's have said and you need to give us more info. "I added two containers" is pretty much useless if that's all we have to go off of to start troubleshooting. More details on what exactly you did, any troubleshooting steps you've already tried, what specific errors you get, etc.

  • I grew up going to school in French, in an area of New Brunswick that's roughly 50/50 Anglo/Franco. I relate a lot to what Fontaine has to say in this interview about how education is vital to linguistic and cultural survival.

On a related note, I find it's a pity there's not more solidarity in regards to Indigenous language rights from minority Francophone communities. You'd think we'd empathize with their plight, and we could be allies in this fight. Sadly, a lot of people buy into the anti-indigenous rhetoric that permeates Canada.

  • The app you're thinking of is StreetComplete!

Which reminds me, I should really download it and start contributing to OSM.

  • It's a bit unreal to be reading a serious, sincere article about Canadian insurgency in the face of an invasion from the US. I get that The Tyee isn't exactly mainstream journalism, but it's hardly your local anarchist newsletter either.

After spending most of my life fearing societal collapse, instability, and war, it feels like everything is suddenly right at our doorstep. I'm scared.

  • Lincoln is such a good album, we're so blessed to walk in the glow of TMBG's majestic presence.

  • I was having issues getting my Android device to use my local DNS server over VPN, what worked for me was setting it up through RethinkDNS. There's a setting to prevent DNS leaks by capturing all traffic on port 53 and directing it to the DNS server you set. It doesn't feel like an elegant solution but hey, it works.

Note, you'll have to make sure your private DNS setting is off, in the internet section of the system settings.

  • Speaking of Fedecan, the fedecan.ca website is showing a GitHub pages 404 error right now. I wanted to link it to encourage people to donate, I've been really appreciative of the way this instance is run (and have donated in the past). Thanks for all the effort the team puts in to make this a good home instance.

  • I had just turned 14 the first time I smoked weed. I stole some from my parent's stash after encouragement from a kid I played Team Fortress 2 with and smoked it in the garage when they were gone. I kept on doing this on a weekly to bi-weekly basis throughout my teenage years. My parents only learned about it when I told them a few years ago.

Was 17 the first time I got drunk, in a small garage (or large shed, depending on your perspective) with some friends and some adult supervision in the form of my friend's parents zonked out in front of the TV in their home.

Other drugs (LSD, coke, but mainly shrooms) I experimented with in my mid 20s.
