  • Yeah. Didn't work on Librewolf (only stock FF), the UI was slow, the recommendations (the reason I wanted to try) were pretty bad, the ads couldn't be blocked properly and left a few seconds of silence in their place (the only site I encountered that behaved like this!), and logged me out repeatedly (sometimes mid-session), presumably due to me using a proxy.

  • And I2P is more suited for torrenting by design...

  • Why not just pay the membership in cash? I am not sure my gym even offers autorenewal, but would avoid it anyway because of instances like this.

  • Used to use Vanced (not Revanced because it was a while ago), but after switching to Newpipe, I cannot imagine going back. It is just so much lighter and smoother.

  • I feel like there would be no "Year of the Linux Desktop", but rather the year of "Oh wow when did we hit 20% already?" A death of a thousand cuts is more plausible.

  • Also merch and concerts, if this fits you.

  • He mentions that "DivestOS and its apps will not receive any further updates", and only mentions continuing non-app projects, so I guess so :(

  • Where did you get the info? Signal and Viber are indeed blocked but usable via VPNs that a lot of people have anyway. Whatsapp was never even attempted to be blocked and remains absolutely dominant together with Telegram. Matrix is a protocol rather than a platform so can't really be blocked, but even matrix.org was never blocked either. Simplex was blocked a while ago, but again, it is a protocol, so they could only block the central servers and apparently port 5223 too. But both were quietly unblocked a short time after, no idea why.

  • The encryption that is not even available outside of mobile?

  • DivestOS is a modified version of Android. Mull is an Android browser, fork of Firefox, maintained by the Divest dev.

  • I thought it was just collecting and selling user data but while I'd bet it's still happening - wow, this is way craftier.

  • In my country, they're planning to phase out 3G, while 2G is very unclear because of just how many things rely on it, not just phones.

  • Ring is pretty Orwellian... Piping the stream from your door right to the police.

  • I'm on Newpipe, it only rarely stopped working like this.

  • Whenever I hear about such markets, I wonder whether their offerings are stolen or just registered for sale...

  • Where did you see that? There are quite a lot of Linux apps in the list.

  • Yes!! I hosted it, indeed much lighter on resources! Broke encrypted rooms a few times, but overall was fine. However, it lacks deletion of old media and messages, so I broke it while trying to delete big media one by one (it broke displaying of ALL media). And when I reinstalled, a reinstall just didn't launch. So... While it is 100% on me, feels like it's still not the optimal solution if you're constrained on disk space.

  • I've seen popular social media get banned. Again and again. It doesn't really lead to local alternatives gaining traction, it just leads to even a gramma knowing what a VPN is.

  • I am very unfamiliar with jmp.chat and don't use notifications, but from what I've heard - Conversations (with UnifiedPush notifications) isn't that bad.

As for Simplex - a problem indeed, you effectively can't have an account shared between devices, but I just have identical profiles on my phone and computer. Also, people have complained about it consuming battery quickly (they switch to checking for notification every set interval to save it).

But yeah - I think both are worth trying to see if maybe one of them fits you! They're both super easy to host.
