  • Suit girl is literally me

  • This is probably the shooting in Prague

  • Also, while the applications I use can be installed on other platforms, they're only supported on Ubuntu.

  • I'm pretty happy using Ubuntu. Its got a decent UI and works well enough with little fuss. As much as I enjoy tinkering, I use my Ubuntu machines for work and I really only need something simple that works out of the box.

  • This is for the UK, Cadbury's purple has been a registered mark since 2006 here

  • One job I was fired from and rehired within the day, after they quickly realised that I was their only Android developer and they couldn't build an app with just hopes and wishes. They fired me again later, which they quickly regretted since I was the only one with the signing key (meaning they couldn't update the app).

  • It's difficult (as in you need massive market recognition of which the specific colour is a major component), but you are allowed to trademark specific shades of a colour. Even then, like regular trademarks, you can only make the trademark in the specific field in which it is used commercially. In this case "Cadbury Purple" is registered in class 30, which covers most kinds of chocolate packaging. You can see their registration here.

  • I just used the spoiler button in the lemmy interface. I don't think there is a standard way of formatting spoilers in markdown?

  • ::: spoiler spoiler

::: I used to occasionally watch James Somerton's videos. Holy shit, what a fundamentally uncreative piece of shit. I can't believe he exploited such an important discourse and niche just for his own gain.

  • I look forward to the day these bigots are seen in the same light as segregationists. Assuming that day comes, that is.

  • Benefit of being a lightweight in Australia is I don't have to bankrupt myself to get drunk

  • It's Australia. We have a very heavy alcohol tax on everything except wine.

  • Companies are always going to make shitty changes, but that doesn't change the reality that industry leaders are usually in that position for a reason. You simply cannot replace After Effects without kneecapping yourself. GIMP is nowhere near as capable as Photoshop. It is impossible to develop iOS apps without Xcode, and difficult/unsupported to develop Android without Android Studio.

You can piss off your high horse as much as you want, but it is fantastical to claim that professions should hamstring their work and sacrifice reality and practicality for the sake of some ideology belief. Companies aren't choosing these standards because they love giving away money, they're doing it because they recognise that rejecting a $300 annual expense for $10,000 worth of greater productivity is financially irresponsible.

  • I just read Yellowface. Hated nearly every character but loved the book. Also read Our Wives Under the Sea and it instantly became one of my favourite books ever.

  • Ah, the James Damore archetype of an engineer. I bet they get wet dreams imagining themselves as the Howard Roark of programming (and just as delusional).

  • It's worth noting that Australian and American interpretations of liberalism differ quite significantly. The modern Liberal party and its predecessors formed in direct opposition to the Labor party, in direct opposition to the labor movement. They formed as a party against radical social change, against socialism, and for free-market policies and laissez faire capitalism, describing themselves as "classical liberals". On the other hand, "liberalism" in the US more refers to social liberalism, but it's actually the exception in that regard.

All that is to say that, when Australians refer to someone as a liberal, we mean a different interpretation of the word closer to classical liberalism.

  • At least John Oliver has done some nice pieces about trans people I guess?

  • Having worked on an app that incorporated these kinds of error messages, it's not about bordem, it's about not scaring/confusing the user. "Something went wrong and your computer will restart" is more understandable to a layperson, than "Exception: Segmentation Fault". Usually messages also need to fit within an organisations documented "tone of voice". Personally, my preference is for friendly text followed by technical details.

  • My preferred one is Withings one's. They're hybrid watches which means they largely have a regular watch face with a little screen and a heart rate sensor/gyroscope. Best of both worlds in my opinion.
