This is exactly what I do! Unfortunately, when I first log into Lemmy or Kbin, despite me having my settings set to show me only subscribed stuff by default, it totally ignores that setting (and what communities I’ve blocked) and just shows me the equivalent of /all on kbin or on that Lemmy server. You can get back to only seeing subscribed things by refreshing, but at that point the damage has been done, the NSFW has already popped up on your screen and you have to refresh to take it away. Seems just in the realm of “annoying” except for the fact that some people also have their defaults set to subscribed in an effort to avoid ragebait or triggering content.

There’s a codeberg issue for this on kbin already, so just have to wait for it to be addressed. Not sure if Lemmy has an equivalent issue on their GitHub (or whatever they use) yet.

I do not have the same problem as OP. Probably because when I made my accounts, if there was an option to disable NSFW (or not enable NSFW) I made sure to have NSFW disabled/not enabled.

I appreciate that you’re actually respectfully disagreeing instead of deciding that someone with a different opinion than you must clearly be a Reddit bootlicker and a [insert more insults here]. Even if they’re still opposed to Reddit’s actions and just think the best anti-Reddit action is different from what you think it is. I’ve seen way too much of that on Reddit discussion on Reddit alternatives, so thanks for not doing that.

https://lemmit.online/ is trying to archive Reddit, as are the people at r/DataHoarders (the link https://libreddit.projectsegfau.lt/r/DataHoarder/comments/146msr8/isthereacompletebackupofreddit/ will not give traffic to Reddit). https://the-eye.eu/redarcs/ is an existing Reddit backup, though I don’t know how complete it is.

What I meant by “enshittification” is this:

The linked article explains it a lot better with a specific example in my opinion, but the example is pretty long, so I just provided the quick definition from the article.

because what I actually meant here was gatekeeping it from corporations who will try to enshittify it. Like Meta. I misspoke and I apologize for that.

I’m very suspicious of Meta and its intentions. I also don’t think I’m better than a Meta user except in my choice of social media platforms, which is only even possible because I haven’t gotten myself into social groups that primarily communicate there. Not everyone is so lucky. If my social group were slightly different I might be a resentful Meta user holding my nose because I would value having a social life over avoiding a company that’s got pretty much everyone entangled anyways. I’d probably try to get people to move platforms, and probably complain about Facebook and Meta as often as I could without annoying everyone, but it’s very likely that they wouldn’t all move off the platform just because one person in the group hates it.

Meta users are welcome to come here. I want everyone to have a non-enshittified, non-corporate social media and that includes people who are currently on an enshittified corporate social media. But Meta itself is not welcome. That means no Threads, no touching us with Meta, go make a non-Meta Fediverse account first. Even if defederating them might not be the most effective, even though they can scrape all our stuff regardless of their federation status, I want to send the message that Meta is very unwelcome here. But its users are welcome. We shouldn’t try to hoard the non-enshittified place all to ourselves. Only gatekeep the place from people who will try to enshittify it—and Grandma from Facebook is not going to try to squeeze us for cash.

Thank you for the clarification! I don’t use Mastodon because I’ve never really been interested in Twitter, so I was very unaware of that.

what makes Mastodon style federation even better than that is that you can move your account from one server to another in a way you really can’t for email.

Not sure how that works. With emails, if I move from email123@aol.com to email123@protonmail.com I lose my old emails and people trying to contact me there, but I can just start over. If I remember peoples’ emails I can also tell them I moved to protonmail and to talk to me there. With federation, if I move servers I lose my comment, post, and upvoted history; people messaging me; and my subscribed communities; but I can just start over. If I remember people’s usernames and subscribed communities I can tell the people I moved and to talk to me there, and re-subscribe on the new account. Unlike with email I can still see my old account’s comments and posts, but otherwise I’m not sure how moving accounts in the Fediverse is different from changing emails.
