  • I mostly avoided it so my memory may be off here, but weren't there still a fair number of folks that posted to MySpace using parts of their real name and, imo slightly worse (in terms of privacy), using photos of themselves as profile pics? Real names are one thing but photos of yourself are just a dead giveaway.

  • Yeah, was my mistake. I thought maybe more folks had heard of it. 😅 Microsoft tried to push it pretty hard for the short time it was around.

Edit: changed link in the original post to one posted above. The original post initially linked to this article for anyone curious.

  • You mean remove the cross-post link? If so my bad, didn't think it crossed any of the rules. I was mainly doing so as a means to highlight the parallel communities (was originally going to post from db0 & cross-post to here, but posts are closed there).

Edit: also agh, .world's loading slow for me, so sorry for delayed response.

  • Think that's more or less correct, but regarding @drturtle@lemmy.world's question about overloading, I think that it may affect folks even on other instances if Lemmy.world's overloading affects its response time to other servers attempting to sync with it.

E.g. Lemmy.world is bogged down -> Lemm.ee tries to sync posts/comments from .world -> .world takes a longer time to fulfill the request -> Lemm.ee sees older posts/comments for awhile until .world catches up to requests.

  • Ideally speaking, it shouldn't matter much which instance you pick, but that's one of the biggest miscommunications about how all this stuff works, speaking ideally rather than realistically.

Realistically instance choice matters both regarding technical stuff like how well it handles traffic and social stuff like whether folks are discussing anything that interests you to begin with and whether the instance's moderation style appeals to you. When all of this pans out, the tech should fade into the background, but as we've seen, it's early days yet in that regard.

  • DVDs are sick. They may not be the highest fidelity but they're much more convenient to rip (many PCs can still be found with regular cd/dvd drives whereas I don't know of many with blu-ray drives) and store (lower fidelity means the rips take less space, aayy!).

  • I'd count locally hosted stuff, yeah. I have a Jellyfin server in my local network that I use as a fallback for if internet goes down or a streaming service is having some issue. The latter is admittedly rare, but the former, unfortunately not so much.

Regarding maps, this is why I also mentioned print maps. It can get dense if you go hyper-detailed and digital, like you mention, but we've also had less detailed yet still pretty useful print atlases in the past...I just haven't taken the time to look up what some good ones might be to pick up, in case I ever just find myself in a weird situation without signal for mobile data or something. Or for some locales that they just couldn't get a Google car down or whatever.

  • Honestly, yeah, size standardization in some form would help so, so much. It's such a pain trying to figure out whether something will fit, even when it says it's the same size as another garment, like you say, 14 at one shop or even in one brand and 16 in another.

  • Hmm, I feel like the unisex backpack/slingbag may be what more folks are converging on. Purses increasingly only make sense for formal occasions, imo. Regardless, whatever one calls them, I tend to agree!

Plus, if cargo pants are so loathed, only makes sense to make some kinda bag to lug odds & ends the norm.

  • Less is more. I can buy less music, but I listen to it better.

This is me having listened to some of the same few albums for several years now. I only just realized as Janelle Monae is releasing a new album that I've been repeatedly listening to songs from her last album ever since and yet it still feels so damn fresh. So it's not even that I'm not keeping up with current music, I just tend to savor it.
