  • For music:
    Bandcamp, mainly indie.
7digital, a decent mix of popular and indie.
Qobuz, like 7digital, a mix of popular and indie.

iTunes and Amazon also sell their music DRM-free to an extent, but I'm always skeptical of whether what I'm getting from them is or not because they don't make it a selling point.

    For books:
    Smashwords
    Weightless Books

    For games:
    GOG
Humble Bundle Store, albeit you'll have to filter by DRM-free to ensure you're finding games sold that way.
Itch.io this is like the Bandcamp of games, meaning that most of the titles distributed here are indie and experimental.

I'm still on the lookout for digital tv/movies, so unfortunately I don't have any pointers for those, but hopefully the rest of these help if they're available in your region!

  • Just a reminder that anything digitally bought you don’t own.

I wish people would stop saying this. There's a middle ground for digital media people should be reminded of: DRM-free digital media. In that situation it's much like a physical DVD/blu-ray or the like, you own a copy of it, you can back it up, share it (though the terms & conditions will often discourage this), and so on.

This all or nothing talk of digital media only encourages people to give up and give in to restricted digital media via streaming or limited downloads/installs, both of which do better enable them to diminish your ownership.

  • All of the sites I linked to offer digital downloads of purchased music to play locally, so yes! I specifically sought these out because I prefer to have local files analogous to owning physical media, as I really don't like perpetually renting media (i.e. subscription services).

  • This is going to sound dead obvious, but I'd honestly recommend some Intro to Philosophy/Logic/Ethics books, e.g. Logic: A Very Short Introduction or The Logic Manual. I know you're not necessarily looking at logic specifically, btw, but it's one of the regular recommendations with philosophy more generally, especially if you branch out to other thinkers.

Also a somewhat common introductory text that I personally didn't care for is Sophie's World, which acts as a narrative historical overview of Western philosophy. If you want that sort of thing you may be just as well with a text like A Little History of Philosophy, which might be available via your library.

Finally, for ethics, you might look to Hornbook Ethics and/or Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? Besides A Little History of Philosophy, if memory serves all of these I've linked to have at one point or another been required texts for different philosophy and ethics courses depending on where one attends, so in reading these independently you'd basically be getting some intro level course education on the cheap.

Honestly though, I'd say reading the primary texts as you're doing isn't a terrible way to go about it, as that's what many philosophy courses would have you do anyway. What I would recommend alongside that is the same as I'd recommend for any older text then, which is to read up on the historical context to get a better sense of what may have influenced their writing, how they were received by their peers and broader community (if they were noticed at all during their life), and develop your understanding from there.

Sorry if this is a bit much, but I hope it helps! Be sure to check your local libraries for any of these before buying them btw, as they may have hard copies available despite not having digital copies. Also remember that college/university libraries may be an option too, albeit likely more costly if they do offer a library card to borrow materials.

  • ...I imagine you're being serious, but as someone unfamiliar with this, it reads as almost being some kind of obscure joke. Gills?? Troy pounds??

This is some merfolk conspiracy to mess with landfolk, far as I'm concerned.

  • I tried Amazon but I was having trouble finding albums or songs to download specifically. Has to be my mistake since I see it recommended everywhere. Amazon Music is just a streaming service as far as I know?

I don't use Amazon for music much myself, but last I did, I think the way I found the download options was to search for the albums themselves as if I was trying to buy a physical copy, which much like books and other stuff, will often present a digital purchase option when available.

I stopped using it because it just felt way clunkier to deal with, which was even before they got into music streaming if memory serves (or at least, before they had prioritized it).

  • For buying music, besides the big names like Amazon/iTunes, you might consider:

7digital UK or 7digital US, if in neither country, I think it should try to point you to the relevant storefront for yours if they have one.

Qobuz, which appears to be available in more countries.

Bandcamp for indies and experimental music.

The first two have a good mix of major labels and indies, so are probably your best bet after Amazon/iTunes, meanwhile Bandcamp is great for more niche and potentially upcoming artists. So far as I can tell there isn't really just one storefront to go with for buying music unless you're okay with the aforementioned big names.

  • We're not in /c/technology nor a tech themed instance, it's a showerthought post (so the vibe should be casual), maybe learn to read a room?

    Edit:
Also, it's not as if I was speaking authoritatively, I was speaking to my experiences and I was upfront about the limits of my knowledge. Instead of bothering to constructively correct me, you flatly went, "Yeah, no." and your entire entry into the convo was pretty condescending for no apparent reason.

  • And then in the end, he found out the part wanted to cite (about a clergyman burning a granary to punish a village for their sinfulness) was actually just a passage about tax levies that was deliberately mistranslated by one of those charlatan gentleman archaeologists from the 19th Century who wanted to discredit the Catholic Church.

This is a great example of how much effort it can take to pick apart bullshit, damn. Thanks for these comments, they've been really interesting to read!

  • I've mainly done this with hashtags, so I may be off if it differs somewhat for keywords, but I'm pretty sure it works as a logical OR.

So if I put a bunch of hashtags in a filter for sports like #sports, #football, #hockey, etc. if a post contains any one of those tags, it should filter it for me. The nice part is you can adjust it so that it either completely hides the filtered results so they don't clutter up your feeds, or hide with warning and the name of the filter on the warning notice, which allows you to click & review the post to see whether you really wanted it caught by your filter or not.

If you're just starting out you'd probably want to run it with warnings first to get a sense of whether it's working as desired, and if not adjust as needed.

Thankfully folks tend to be pretty respectful of spoiler concerns and will specifically say spoilers below when writing about them, use content warnings to hide them, and use hashtags like #[GameName]spoilers, which can help when making filters. It's not ideal, but if I really don't want to see spoilers for something, I'll filter by its name and hashtag and set it not to expire (you can set filters to last only a week if you like, so you don't forget to disable them).

  • If it's not there, one may also try checking the about page or the instance's Meta/Announcements/Status/etc. magazine(s), as it ultimately depends on where and if the admin has decided to make the info available so far as I can tell after glancing over a few Kbinstances.

As an example: kbin.cafe doesn't have the admin info/profile on the about or contact page, but they're the owner of the CafeMeta magazine.

  • I think it's less to do with tolerating stupid questions and more to do with the fact it was against their rules...Rule 5 in particular. If you waited, you might've been able to eke by on their joke/troll question day.

  • It's been awhile since I made a new account on a Mastodon instance, but is search engine indexing enabled by default? If it isn't, then that would probably be part of why this is being made opt-in for Mastodon search, as there's been a vocal portion of folks on Mastodon opposed to search across the board.

Even if search engine indexing was enabled by default, y'know those vocal folks probably disable it ASAP and would be making a fuss if this update went & enabled Mastodon search by default. Which, well, why post publicly at all if the concern's related to privacy or not being bothered by internet randos, but 🤷‍♀️
