Conservative MP Says He Trusts Porn Companies Won’t Leak Digital IDs of Canadians Who Visit Porn Websites

Oh boy... Digital ID is not about tracking citizens movement. If you file your taxes every year or change your mail delivery at the post office they already know where you are roughly. It's a government services key meant to streamline services and provide insurable encryption protection for government sign ins to try and keep service Canada digital information more secure. Those service Canada sign ins already exist and they already log location data the same way your Gmail account does to flag potential insecurity in the system. The Digital IDis just designed to try and be an anti phishing measure. The thing is also completely voluntary because like any encryption it isn't perfect.
The reason the Liberals are not happy about the whole individualized digital ID for porn is that they are listening to the techs and have concerns that even if the porn people were watching was kosher the encryption would have to handshake with the sketchiest sites who would be able to mine location data from users by default and potentially cause issues with identity theft issues. If some phishing scammer manages to crack the system you could have a situation where people start cloning the IDs and creating prime blackmail material. Imagine if you will someone telling you that they have your Digital ID and they are gunna go use it on some kiddie porn if you don't do what they want.
There's also just logistical concerns because the handshake has to go both ways. To make it work you have to give the code that can be easily backwards engineered to the owners of the websites.
The Digital ID the Conservatives are proposing crack downs would also be would be basically semi mandatory. Honestly it would probably just drive more people to get their wanking material from even less legitimate places that don't require the ID...funneling more people into the porn black market.
It had substance... Just in the form of dead trees in large collated stacks held together with the narrative equivalent of chewing gum. The soap bubble veneer encapsulating nothing but hot air
It doesn't matter. The Republicans have the conspiracy theorists in their pocket who have been so scepticism poisoned that they basically believe what they believe process or evidence be damned but are very good at creating red string webs based on the unproven negative space of the unproven but not impossible.
Palingenetic ultranationalism.
The idea that facism rallies around an idea society has grown decadent, corrupt an alienating to the everyman and must return to a country's mythic golden age when everything was better. It applies a "true inheritor" logic that describes a model citizen of the nation which is distinct from those who are it's corrupting influence that must be subjugated or expunged by a country's "rebirth" .
While Christian nationalism is distinct it still shakes hands with others served by this model.
Ah yes. It was the people asking that maybe people should be more consciencous and to not be openly terrible who are to blame for it all...
Not the entitled asshats who puffed up their chests and screamed "You can't tell me what to do!" when someone told them "You're being kinda hurtful could you please stop? "
Here's the thing when your life sucks because people are being regularly being awful. Not mentioning anything and being quiet and meek and accepting of other people basically being a regular impingment on your ability to flourish or be comfortable doesn't change your circumstances. They are just gunna keep being awful and draining your batteries. Also those people flipped the fuck out over "hey maybe the way women are depicted in videogames is kind of male centric and kind of shit if you aren't a guy" and in response went on a terror campaign to literally ruin the lives of those who decided to mention that maybe they were dreaming of a better situation. That little over-reaction was not proportionate in scope.
Fighting for empathy is a hard business. The "anti-woke" can never truly win as what they seek to suppress will always be there. They must always exert force because that dissatisfaction and misery that underlies the asks won't go away... it can be silenced, rendered mute by fear and consequences of retaliation and stifled for another generation but the cost is that the boot must always be forced down because it's never quite able to eliminate that final resistance of people coming into existance who realize they aren't who society is built for and who have no option but to suffer. The people beneath the boot might be weakened temporarily as the fight ebbs and flows but the harder the boot comes down the deeper the dispair the more desperate the resistance.
Just the implications that people are unhappy does not sit well with the anti-woke crowd. They resent the idea that people's unhappiness is directly caused by them which rubs uncomfortably against their idea of the world as an ultimately fair place. Hence why they always argue that people are lying and exaggerating their discomfort. That the facts are wrong, that the people they are causing pain to deserve it somehow. It's all just lame dodges around the central issue. They are causing discomfort. They can choose to double down and cause more, ignore it or rationalize it or choose to believe that they as the truest form of being knows what's best for the people experiencing it- indeed better than the people who live that experience ... But they cannot end it.
The notion that what they are being asked to do won't individually impact them very much is something that they scoff at and then just ignore spaces where these adaptations have been successful. The landscape of gaming became a little more equitable after gamergate because some developers basically just realized that yeah, maybe they were undercutting women and changing formulas a little does kind of expand their market? Gamergate threw their tantrum but most of them barely registered that gaming still continued to service their needs while expanding it's service to others but because they were on to throwing a tantrum about something else they never really registered that what changed was... fine actually?
For a long time I thought the whole pronoun /name /being outta the closet thing didn't personally matter to me to make the effort to attempt to change it.
Yeah I figured out I was trans at age 21 in the quite distant past but like my partner had sex characteristic preferences that meant that as long as I prioritized him in my long term goals I wasn't physically changing. I figured you know boo hoo I was ugly and people didn't really get me most of the time but you know... Big deal? I was stable enough. I wasn't under particular hardship because aside from some vague presentation pressure from time to time everyone just basically accepted I was quirky and liked me enough without putting much emphasis on my gender anyway... I ended up trying gender neutral pronouns basically as a lark, a way of proving to myself that I was fine.
Turns out I was not fine.
I didn't realize how shit I felt on a regular basis nor how much less energy all my social connections would need once I made the changeover. I really didn't realize that such a tiny thing was subtly poisoning every single interaction I had with people. I stopped experiencing stress heartburn and headaches after time spent with friends. I was usually pretty quiet and withdrawn but I actually started being generally more gregarious and active. I stopped feeling invisible and lonely. I went from low key disliking people to actually liking them. It was like someone suddenly replaced my batteries. I never expected something so small to make so big a difference.
Seriously right?!
What chances have I without
My motorized steed?
It's become the habit of leftist spaces since the first sign of the poisoning of a space by the right is usually in the humor. The cycle of "Oh I was just saying this racist thing to be edgy, I didn't mean to be serious!" to "Oh you're too sensitive you're ruining everyone's fun" to driving vulnerable minorities out of spaces because it's just bloody toxic to explain when something is sucky and courting vicious attacks for being "political" when trying to stick up for themselves thus making what remains hotbeds of ever deepening unironic racism/sexism/queerphobia etc... Yeah. It does mean that any spaces with leftists left in them tend to be very corrective in the way they engage with memes and jokes.
I suppose it's a little of a "this is how you get ants" situation in moderation.
I lived in Japan for a year. Travelled and set up a new vase of operations every 2 months or so... and I rode a car exactly 4 times over the full year. Once was in a single day there and back again during a company trip. Once was in a cop car when I got so very lost on my way to my destination in the boonies that the bus driver I was trying to talk to waved over the police who decided to just give me a lift... And once was a taxi I took because I just decided I was too tired to huff my 60 lbs worth of possessions to board a boat in Tokyo Bay.
It was brilliant. Now I am back in Canada and it's basically just Australia but cold.
Yeah, I am on team "Fuck Car Dependance" because I hate everything about em - driving, the ecological impact of cars and the society wide inequalities created and reinforces by designing space around them.
But I would be virtually unhirable in my field if I didn't drive... And there is zero way to fix that even if we managed to dismantle the system of strodes, massive parking lots, low density suburbs, inadequate public transit etc...
Gods... I thought the reverse and that I hadn't encountered as much rape apologism on here as compared to reddit. Maybe I've somehow managed to buck a trend with my subscriptions or something? Anyway you alice it I hope that things just generally get better.
Rape apologists are just... Bleaaahg...
Oof... Lemme tell yeh the people who believe in gold are very dedicated. The idea of a currency collapse where gold will retain it's value is sort of the hoarding food and toilet paper for an apocalypse move... But gold is just as subject to becoming very close to useless as anything else in situations of extreme scarcity. There are lots of tales of wartime famine where people wheel out and lose what would normally be considered valuable to trade for practically nothing. Other than that the market value of gold can dip just like anything else but people love the stuff by default it seems.
I regularly fear for the Americans I have connected to since the days of covid stretched my group of friends more into online spaces.
One got beaten to shit by a bad boss when he tried to retrieve his tips. All at once he had injuries that kept him out of work, mental trauma and legitimate fear for his safety that meant he couldn't return to his job but also because work and insurance are tied down there he was in an immediate precarity. He couldn't return to work, the cops showed active disinterest in helping him press charges and his hospital bills blew through his savings... And because he had technically quit there was no EI safety net either.
I was struck so hard by the dystopian nature of it all. There is so much under the Canadian system which is just never a factor. I didn't realize how free I actually was because I had never tied my considerations of my health to what job I chose or whether I was unemployed. I was used to my medical services bill just being this tiny expense I had set to autopay that was so small I didn't even have to think about. They don't even charge that any more.
All I ever had to do to get help was ask and it was freely given. I had no cause to ever question exactly how much of a blessing... How much of a privilege... that actually was.
A lot. I may not have been aware that I was trans back when I was a kid but growing up became a very lonely existence once girls and boys isolated themselves into their little tribes. When the siloing process sticks you with a peer group that implicitly knows you to be an ill fit and even when you try to get along your brain doesn't register that gendered sense of "this is a person who acts and thinks like me" you don't as a habit really make very close friends.
Kids are very good at forming hardcore social bonds where they let their sense of individual identity slip in favor of their group. While I didn't experience trans hate growing up directly persay being placed in situations where you just can't make decent bonds tends to make you an easy target for being ripped to shreds as somebody else's exercise of building pack solidarity. It takes very little for children to find justification to be violent.
He is an interesting literary figure. And in personal opinion quite frankly kind of a hack. You got to appreciate the audacity of someone who tries to use "Dost" nearly two centuries out of date and then just out of the blue makes up wholesale complete words from scratch to fit iambic pentameter.
I love his stuff don't get me wrong but he wasn't exactly highbrow entertainment of his day. Still his early modern English is easily legible. Chaucer's middle english is distinctly more garbled and if you go back to your Old English where these terms originate it's like trying to read another language entirely. Like this is technically English :
Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum, þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon, hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon. Oft Scyld Scefing sceaþena þreatum, monegum mægþum, meodosetla ofteah, egsode eorlas. Syððan ærest wearð feasceaft funden, he þæs frofre gebad, weox under wolcnum, weorðmyndum þah, oðþæt him æghwylc þara ymbsittendra ofer hronrade hyran scolde, gomban gyldan. þæt wæs god cyning.
Shakespeare was known to use archaic language for his plays but by his time this was largely codified into what we would recognize as modern usage. You are thinking of old English. It also goes beyond just man (used more or less like we would use the word human) , other gendered words originally had specific meaning independent of gender. You also got it a bit backwards. Wifman is female, wereman is male. Others include.
Boy : knave or troublemaker
Girl : Neutral word for young child. Basically like "kid"
Thank you...and you are not alone. Generally speaking my experience is that people sort of treat non-binary folk as just a third category, like pips on a government questionnaire. A friend of mine started dating a non-binary person and was quite startled when after a few meet ups I asked them where they sat inside the non-binary spectrum. It simply never occurred to him that how we hope others would ideally conceptualize us individually is a way to feel like people actually see us better underneath the obsufcating factors of physical phenotype. Most people just ask for pronouns and figure job done... And that is fine really but any two non-binary people might have very different emotional needs or presentations. Most people just assume something like agender and then stop really thinking about it. Most of us will never bring it up but when someone doesn't actually know the details of our deal it can be very difficult to feel holistically understood in the way we sort of hope our nearest and dearest would.
But yeah... When you look at non-binary characters in media you see a lot of shapeshifters, aliens and robots. Things where they physically aren't strictly male or female in a reproductive sense which is more an intersex thing, not a non-binary thing . A lot of our general struggles involve asking for something the human brain isn't strictly programmed to do in ignoring what they see so a lot of the time these depictions sort of naturally exclude a lot of our everyday struggles by simply being physically provable. So when you hear of another non-binary shapeshifter added to a growing list of shapeshifters the reaction becomes "oh. Another one". Like you aren't mad at it but it's definitely not reinventing the wheel. Disney particularly tends to be like 10 years behind on representation and when that antiquated train finally pulls into the station the media makes a big deal and the attitude is that they are being bold and we're generally expected to cheer for whatever stale crumbs they throw our way.
And none of this is to say that enby shapeshifters can't actually be great. Nimona was fantastic rep that dug really deep into trans themes and felt real about misgendering even through it's fantasy lens that somehow managed to punch waaaay above what you expect for a trope normally the domain of very lazy unexplored surface level cnon-binary" rep. That just finds the least potentially hard to grasp situations to use they/them pronouns in. They managed to go very deep into the weeds...
But most of the time in an ensemble peice these shapeshifters are not really ever explored in a way that really resonates or feels real.
... Sigh... Okay so not to be ungrateful as any non-binary representation is basically a good step.... But there's weird issue with non-binary characters so regularly being rendered as shapeshifters or intersex aliens or whatever.
Like, yes, you talk to us and do the "what superpower would you want" thing and like 3/4 of us would say shapeshifting. But there's still this really weird thing where the audience is lead to accept the character's gender because of the character's body. It's sort of just more gender essentialism but via sci fi fuckery. The character is sort of more arguably intersex with non-binary simply being like Prisig's Buddhist principle of "Mu". Are you sexually male or female? - mu. Un-ask the question as the binary does not apply.
Not so much trans representation as the character's gender is in fact kind of in line with their body's physicality. The cis third gender with a presentation that your brain recognizes as both and neither.
I am sure that the character will end up being endearing but like... It's not exciting.
Your "multiple studies of kids showing that they revert naturally before the age of 18" were all conducted in the 70's dude. Non acceptance from a community is very good at creating closeted individuals. We do what we do to try and be happy, if we are routinely physically and socially punished for being who we are we do revert to walking the path of least resistance to survive but it is a hard and miserable path. Here's a study more updated that flips numbers on it's head. Around 95 percent of trans kids who socially transition these days are consistent in their identities over the 5 years of the study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9936352/#:~:text=We%20found%20that%20an%20average,to%20their%20binary%20transgender%20identity.
Also you're treating this healthcare as experimental and new but it's decently far along. Puberty blockers are the newest addition to the tool kit but they were approved for use after extensive research trials over 30 years ago and principles of their safety of use were based on observations from naturally stalled puberties and endocrinology data of hormonal insensitivity disorders...and we've been using them for trans kids pretty much right from the beginning so the first paitents are in their 40's now. There is data that the puberty blocker process is imperfect but like any medical advancement there are nessisary fine tunings of treatment. It's not a set it and forget it situation. We know the endocrinologist check ins and scans need to keep coming and the risk assessment for a paused puberty needs to be a carefully routinely updated thing with suspension of treatment being a viable option if things don't go well...but removing the option from the medical feild entirely and refusing to keep working to develop its safety efficacy further and isn't going to make overall treatment outcomes better for patients.
This lie that doctors are slapdash and haphazard in trans healthcare is nothing but fabrication. It requires a panel of a psychologist, social worker, pediatrician and endocrinologist the child and the child's legal guardians to sign off on any medical interventions and they have to do their research first to meet a determined burden of proof that interventions are nessisary and they make it a pretty high bar... At 16 there's very limited number of things available and any surgeries made available are also available to cis kids. If a 16 year old teen wants a breast reduction it doesn't matter if their trans or not they just need parental approval. Hormonal transition requires a lot more sign off than that. If a parent doesn't sign off then the kid can't make their own medical choices until after 18. The system is designed to mitigate risks and yes a lot of the outcomes for trans paitents are markedly better when they can more effortlessly pass as their gender because you avoid a lot of social shunning and hate when your transness is invisible to the public.
Our society creates a catch 22 senario for trans people where segements of society demand that a person isn't actually a viable member of their gender unless they can show medical documentation they've transitioned... And they treat non-binary trans masc and trans femme non medical coping strategies as being less legitimate. If you are trying to navigate a situation where you require coping strategies to deal with experiencing daily body horror and you deny people the use of mental only coping mechanisms they are not going to veiw mental only coping mechanisms a reasonable solve. Telling us that one option to deal with our problems is self harm and then making fun of or dismissing the other as "social contagion" and treating us as a different kind of problem is basically just telling us that you think permanent misery should be our only option.
If you REALLY want to lessen the pressures on trans people to medically transition your move is not to clamp down on medical options... It's to make non-binary physical presentations and safe rewarding social transitions a more viable option by offering greater levels of social acceptance. The whole "Well I will never accept you as a ____. Because physically you are not" behavior does nothing but add fuel to a dysphoria and injure a trans person's ability to exist comfortably in a social sphere. Cis people make an equal fuss about pronouns as they do surgeries. There's zero empathy. Faced with that we are just going to try harder to physically hide from you so you can't visually pick us out of a crowd using whatever means we have.
Social contagion and the likes of Abagail Shrier is a discredited myth. At best the very shallow end of non-binary transness might be represented but that is basically "I don't like it when people make a big assumptions of me based around my sexual characteristics so please don't " which is kind of just a reasonable response to sexism. The actual euphoria /dysphoria body and culture related stuff isn't something you are going to catch... And framing medical transition in terms of self harm is gross. What people feel and ultimately choose to do with their bodies is something individually very cautiously considered. Treating the matter as though they are defacing a public owned good or resource is just projection. Your values regarding your sexual organs and physical characteristics are not universal. You do not have to live their lives, their choices are not your business so please stay in your lane.
Lastly, people tell trans kids they are loved because as people we are routinely framed by hostile cis people as a logistical problem. Telling kids they are a problem tends to drive them inside themselves and creates a sense of isolation. A lot of kids growing up, not just trans kids already generally think that people won't miss them if they just disappear because they are a burden or a problem. The youngest trans kid I know right now is seven... And they have already had peers their age tell them to their face that they should kill themself. When I was growing up the "weird kid" I wanted to die but I knew my family wouldn't recover from that so I didn't. It isn't that kids are doing this to be lavished with attention. I can tell you that the experience of myself and every trans person I know is that people making any kind of big deal about us based on our genders positive or negative just makes you feel like an outsider. People harping on about how "strong" you are for being visible generally just comes across as pulling more attention to things we just want people to treat as so normal it's beneath commentary. That young trans person I know today struggles because they are closeted at school not wanting to stick out from the crowd because they fear the potential unwanted fuss and can only be themselves at home. I am partially closeted at work partially because it will negatively impact my hiring chances between gigs and partially because onboarding new people into understanding non-binary transness and using correct pronouns is exhausting. Having everyone take their trans hot takes to you or asking invasive questions about your life experiences while you have shit on the docket to do quite frankly sucks.
Your understanding of trans people isn't based on first hand or even second hand knowledge of our experience or from empathy towards our situations. It's in the framework of us being a "problem".
A problem of your convenience an "I shouldn't have to change my behaviour to make someone else's life easier ".
A logistical problem a " we shouldn't have to make concessions or changes as a society for the benefit of the few".
A mental problem "They are delusional or mentally ill and we shouldn't listen to what they say they need."
A medical problem "Well they shouldn't have access to the system because they take up resources and their choices creep me out. What if they do something they regret? ".
A safety problem "You're leaving the door open for creeps to take advantage. "
A visual problem "They are ugly and I should not have to see them. My kid shouldn't have to see people like that. "
An authority problem "I as a parent ahould have control of my child's behaviour at all times. "
All of this framework doesn't hold ANY solutions for us. They just hold solutions for you so people just don't have to interact, think of or see us...we just can be swept under the rug as unfortunates and failures which is no way to live.
It is an odd adoption but the Punisher skull is a known alt-right symbol particularly amongst the "Three Percenters", Proud boys and a certain age range of Neo Nazis.
The alt right continuously does this thing where they adopt symbols to recognize each other in a pack but the shit they choose is purposefully ridiculous and childish so you sound like an absolute moron trying to explain to an authority that pepe the frog is actually potentially construable as sexual harassment in certain situations because it's essentially a short hand for rape... It's inane but it is very effective.
Completely off topic but I gotta rant it out...
There's also this thing that the Canadian Conservatives are great at which is controlling the media coverage by lies of omission. My hometown had this whole "scandal" where someone's mic was shut off during a town council for "bringing legitimate concerns about trans people." and papers ran it like that... But what actually happened is the mic shutdown happened because the person in question kept using the mic to be vile about trans people on every open mic opportunity. Open mic portion regarding adding speed bumps : " nope I am gunna talk over the allotable time about pronoun policies in schools." Oh you want to talk about changes to funding structures of municipal trash collections? " Nope mic time to use the t-slur and rant more about woke teachers." One could pretend that they just don't understand the basic Roberts rules of order but their aim is always to spin anything they can as oppression.
They are doing the same here. The articles are not providing proper context that the patch is not just a Star of David patch... It's a black and white version of the Israeli flag with the bars thay mark it as thus. It's not depicting a specific religious stance, it's depicting a political regime. But it creates a fine opportunity for religious bigots to banging the drum about headscarves and turbans and how we should strip government officials of their comfort for daring to have visible markers of their religious beliefs as though these are somehow the same.
Like I get it. Not understanding what counts as hate speech or legitimate targets of criticism is probably very confusing and alarming when you feel like people shut you down at seemingly random ... But they could just assuage their anxieties by just LEARNING the rules. Like we have actual laws about what counts here.
There's technically a warrant process required so you have to be operating on a reasonable proof of misconduct from an individual.
Realistically there are issues with Digital IDs. Like the ones that currently exist are for Service Canada websites and services so stuff like disability benefits, healthcare interfacing stuff, tax ans employment insurance related stuff. It's basically just supposed to be an extra encryption key that makes it easier for users and cuts out password issues... So it's basically just government encryption operating on government sites.
An authentication system requires both halves of an equation to have the program and so backwards engineering the whole thing is very possible by anyone working for the vendors. It opens vectors for nasty blackmail material if someone uses a digital ID to feign access to things. Even without the blackmail angle it can be dangerous...Like if someone posts illegal child porn before a moderation influence flags it someone who knows the system could clone your Digital ID to watch it and you could end up with the legal charges.
This is likely to just push people to go further underground to illicit sources for their porn. The ones that aren't legal businesses or platforms. Essentially it could end up meaning more audience and financial support for the illegal platforms and infrastructure who produce the stuff we desperately want to stop.
