  • Despite Google being heavily invested in the advertising space, they have always been terrible at advertising their own products. It almost seems like the top brass don't actually care about their non-search products at all.

  • It's not really a twist as much as it's a plot point

  • Any inhaled particulate matter from combustion is bad for you. Tobacco products add extra chemicals that make them worse, but just smoke from a regular fire can cause health problems. Cannabis is no exception, despite how much we want the opposite to be true.

I'll edit this post to add a study when I get to my desk

    Edit: Here's a pdf

  • I've never noticed this but I have a feeling I'll never be able to listen to them the same way again

  • Nothing you inhale is good for you, but vaping is significantly better than smoking. It's not even a comparison.

If you are going to inhale something, make it a vape

  • The hard part isn't getting in contact with them.

It's doing so without also being tried and executed for treason

  • It's tough but rewarding. I know it's cliche, but I really wouldn't trade being a dad for anything

  • A few weeks ago

My son (4 months old) refused to sleep and was crying/screaming for like an hour

Very frustrating, and I cried a mixture of sympathy tears and frustration tears

The last time I cried not from my son was like 15 years ago

  • But then you're not able to click a topic and post in it, because you aren't logged onto that instance.

  • One thing I would like is the easy option to browse another instance's local content without being in that instance.

For example, I like my instance (mander.xyz) for being very science focused, but I might like to browse all subs in programming.dev if I want to browse some dev-focused content.

  • I'm the director of technology for a neurology lab, where we collect patient health record data in a variety of disparate machines and modalities (e.g., MRI, EEG, physical functioning, retinal scans, etc.). We've been using the open-source database software REDCap (basically a wrapper for MySQL that enables easy GUI-based data entry), but we are reaching the limits of what it can handle and need something that can scale with our growing database.

I have little experience in database management myself, but I am a competent programmer and feel comfortable learning whatever is needed (famous last words, I know).

  • Can you elaborate? I'm deciding on what type of SQL to use for my lab and am thinking about MySQL. Should we reconsider?

  • Got one of those in Tallahassee. Can confirm about the many jokes.

  • I strongly disagree and my job is researching Alzheimer's and age-related cognitive decline

Age-related decline is minor and Alzheimer's is rare. Neither should play a role in forced retirement

  • Professor of cognitive neurology here

There is research into using gaze behavior (eye movements during targeted cognitive assessments) to develop an objective test of attention symptoms, but otherwise no. The screeners (questionnaires) are all very subjective, and a true diagnosis requires an extensive interview which is also subjective as it requires accurate recognition of one's past behavior. Which is difficult, because the things you don't pay attention to often don't get remembered.

My main focus is on using gaze and speech behavior to diagnose Alzheimers disease and other dementias, but I am planning to expand my research to ADHD in the next few years.

I also have ADHD, and I'm motivated because my kids will probably have it as well.

  • Technically next year is in ~3.5 months. It could launch in January

  • This is a trend that will ultimately lead to safer driving, though. Right now the driver assistance programs aren't uniformly good, but given enough time (or hopefully legislation of new safety standards) these systems will become more and more effective.

It isn't difficult to design a system that effectively keeps your car between the lane, going the speed limit, a safe distance from the car in front of it, and automatically brake or evade if it detects a hazard ahead. We're almost there, we just need better testing, more sensors (in contrast to Elon Musk's profit-motivated push to do otherwise), and ideally more collaboration between the auto manufacturers and the tech industry.

  • The problem isn't that they don't review the procedure

The problem is that they can't review the procedure

  • Why do you care about this so much that you would lie and make shit up?

The article doesn't state that there were multiple warnings, and she didn't break the dress code which is about religious dress not kimonos.
